1. Bonobo

Call his (Simon Green) music what you want, Down-Tempo Lounge or Chill-Out just know he got his start In Brighton, England (Portishead & Massive Attack). This release is his first to incorporate vocals that make this album truly magnificent.

2. The Big Sleep
Son of the Tiger

If you have not heard about them yet, well you have not been in the store the last 3 months! This is the band you will keep on listening to this year! If you get the chance to see them live don’t miss it! They are Rock N’ Roll. And to top that off, they are one of the nicest bands I have had the pleasure to meet

3. Lansing-Dreiden
The Dividing Island
Myspace Page
This was my most played during the summer album. Its just one of those albums I can put on and just rock out too. Very 80’s but not in that over the top lets be another 80’s band for the 2000’s. Kind of sounds like across between Jefferson Starship hooked up with Echo & The Bunnymen…..Huh you ask? Exactly

4. The Black Angels
Passover

If you want some solid indie-rock mixed with some psychedelic rock and shoegaze well this band is for you. This Texas band is far from country. When they bring it, they bring it to party. They not only know how to rock it on the stage, they also know how to tilt the bottle back off stage. Fuzzy memories of fun times.

5. Film School
Self-Titled

Whenever Depeche Mode, New Order, or Interpol don’t release an album I have to get my post-punk fix from someone else. 2006 saw several bands putting out good records. However there is just something about the sound of Film School that made them stand out more to me than the others.

6. My Brightest Diamond
Bring Me the Workhorse

Shara Worden who knows how to perform classical, cabaret, opera, and rock. She was also the “Cheer Captain” for Sufjan Steven’s Illinoisemakers. This album putts all of here talent to very good use. This album just amazed me in ways I did not expect. Not typical in music I generally listen too. This is one of those albums that when you hear it you are subtly drawn into it wanting to hear more.

7. The Whitest Boy Alive
Dreams

Indie-Pop at its finest. Featuring the singing of Erlend Øye (Kings Of Convenience). This is just a fun album upbeat when it needs to be and mellow when its that time. Not a ground breaking album just an all around good listen.

8. Thom Yorke
The Eraser

What can I say other than this Radiohead front mans album is spectacular. Very electronic and yet it still sounds organic. This album is defiantly worthy of the praise it has been getting.

9. The Elected
Sun Sun Sun

I think this was one of the most overlooked albums this year. Fronted by Blake Sennett (guitar & co-song writer for Rilo Kiley), this is heart on your sleeve indie rock for the young and old. Fun and witty the lyrics will have you smiling one minute and crying the next. This is music that came from the heart.

10. Lanterna
Desert Ocean
Myspace Page
Lanterna is the product of guitarist Henry Frayne. An instrumental album, not to be confused with post-rock Instrumental (not that thats bad, just seems to many bands are doing it now). This album would be the cinematic companion to traveling from the shore to the desert in the mountainous areas of the west coast. Sometimes its sunny and hot other times its chilly and damp. I love to listen to this album when I goto sleep and I love to listen to it when I wake up.

Albums that didn’t make “The Ten”
J Dilla- Jay Dee Donuts
I Love You But I’ve Chosen Darkness- Fear is On Our Side
Psychic Ills- Dins
Lovely Feathers- Hind Hind Legs
Boris- Pink
Emily Haines & Soft Skeleton- Knives Don’t Have Your Back
Extra Golden- Ok-oyot System
