When I first heard The Talk, the only song I took a listen to was the album opener Any Other Saturday, and I enjoyed it. I got the album and as a whole I did not like it, I thought it was short, and a bit lackluster. My next step was taking about a week off from the cd and listening to other music, then coming back to The Talk. At which point I realized what my problem had been. The other music I was listening to at the time was so emotionally and intellectually draining that I did not feel like The Talk would fit into that category, therefore discarding it. I now look at this album as a breath of fresh air, Is it short? Yes, is it a load of feel good head bobbing tunes? Yes.
If you are the kind of person who wears glasses when you don’t need to, or describe things as Kafka-esq. then this album is probably not for you. But, if you are like me and try to relax and enjoy music every now and then instead of digging into every detail (snobs like myself tend to do so) then I hope this album is as refreshing for you as it has become for me.
On to the music. The Talk are a pop/indie-punk band out of North Carolina, ABC has picked up a few of their tunes for network TV shows and the song N.Y.L.A. was featured on an episode of The O.C. (OH God!) Their newest full length The Sinners of Daughters is the follow-up to Its Like Magic In Reverse and is full of indie angst. The songs may not be the deepest in thought, but this record is definitely fun to keep in your collection. Some days you may be driving and it seems like all Conor Oberst does is whine in every song, so throw in The Talk and just relax. Nod your head, enjoy music for the pleasure it brings and not always for the coffee talk it produces.
