The Sound the Hare Heard Various Artists Label: Kill Rock Stars Release Date: 05/02/06 |
The Sound the Hare Heard is a compilation of brilliant songs by talented people. The biggest names on here are Sufjan Stevens and Colin Meloy, but that’s a good indication of how talented the other 19 artists are. From the first note of solitary harmonica from Devin Davis to the final strum from Lovers, you’ll be listening intently to this record, eagerly awaiting the next note. Our friend Dave once spoke of skimming the surface of each genre and The Sound the Hare Heard is a great way to do that with the folksy singer/songwriter genre that it features so cohesively. Kill Rock Stars should be lauded for releasing such a comprehensive compilation for the sake of music and not self-promotion; these artists are from many different, competing labels, but are all like-minded in their musical pursuit. There’s a tiny world between Bob Dylan/Joni Mitchell and Jeff Buckley/Gillian Welch and that world has been encompassed and pre-packaged for your convenience. It’s an accessible introduction to a sometimes cluttered genre. And I have to say track seven, “Why” by Essie Jane, is the most beautiful thing I’ve heard in years.
