Wooden Wand - Sundrum

Wooden Wand
Harem of the Sundrum & the Witness Figg
Label: 5 Rue Christine
Release Date: 05/09/06

This is the CD all of your cooler friends were already listening to. This is the second time Harem of the Sundrum & the Witness Figg had been reissued, but it’s the first official rerelease. I really hope it catches on this time around because it’s really good. Think Devendra but more atmospheric or Pink Mountaintops but less fuzzy. Think folk at it’s finest. This is freak folk perfect for hard drinking on hot nights or easy living on breezy days. You can bet I’ll have Wooden Wand in heavy rotation this Summer when I’m laying in my hammock with a case of Pabst.

Formally speaking, Harem of the Sundrum was originally released in 2005 to critical acclaim and commercial failure. In the wake of Devendra’s success, 5RC decided to give us all another chance to discover this avant-garde masterpiece. It’s basic folk structures and evocative lyrics are a welcome addition to the progressive folk catalog. It’s ominous as well as playful and as eerie as it is intimate. Check it out.

what is 5 rue christine? the link is to soft abuse, who originally put this record out. nifty label, run by part of the same tallahassee-to-brooklyn genius exodus as the guy who put together melted mailbox.
