“Dueling cyclones jackknife / They’ve got eyes for your wife / And the blood that lives in her heart”-
\
Is the first line from the opener, Rubies. It\’e2\’80\’99s a 9.5 minute gem of a track that is ultimately a metaphor for the rest of the album; structurally dense, lyrically superlative, and worth every second. I am not a seasoned Destroyer fan, as this was their first I actually took time out on. You know, after the thing starts showing up on everyone\’e2\’80\’99s blog, and your friends are all “DestroyeR!! Mayn, c\’e2\’80\’99mon!” you gotta give it a chance. Right away, this album proved to impress my ears, heart, and even my tounge was all \’e2\’80\’98dude, I\’e2\’80\’99m tastin something sweet!\’e2\’80\’99 These songs were goin\’e2\’80\’99 places and I was coming with. I\’e2\’80\’99m still surprised, though, how easy it is to listen to; probably been playing it at least twice a day for a week now… sometimes, these baaa daaa chorused, and lyrically obscure (think stephen malkmus) tunes call for a certain mood to fully appreciate. But, with Destroyer\’e2\’80\’99s Rubies you don\’e2\’80\’99t need a mood, believe it! Rubies is inadvertently an open door for newbies\’c2\’a0to a delightfully rewarding band who\’e2\’80\’99s new album has essential written all over it. Done. Said it. Get it while it’s hot.
