Austin, TX’s I Love You But I’ve Chosen Darkness are like a darker, moodier Spoon. Doomed to be lumped in with other \’e2\’80\’9cnew-wave\’e2\’80\’9d revivalists, they are certainly influenced by The Smiths and Joy Division, but they don’t fall into the usual derivative trappings of their peers. Fear Is On Our Side is intricate and spacey and spooky as hell and it’s all held together by dense, persistent beats. These songs creep in and just hang around before you really notice they’re even in the room. And when you do notice you’re like, \’e2\’80\’9cHey, you’re cool. Pull up a chair and hang out\’e2\’80\’9d. And your friends might think it’s a little weird, but you don’t care because you like that guy. The songs build slowly and deliberately but when they explode into climax it will leave you grasping for something to hold on to. I dare you to listen to \’e2\’80\’9cWe Choose Faces\’e2\’80\’9d without getting kinda excited. Plus, the band name is like the greatest breakup line ever… \’e2\’80\’9cIt’s not you it’s me. I love you but I’ve chosen Darkness\’e2\’80\’9d.
