Afghan Whigs
Unbreakable: A Retrospective: 1990-2006

The first-ever retrospective compilation from the Afghan Whigs spans 1990-2006 with 18 essential songs totaling over 78 minutes of music. Includes two brand new songs recorded in 2006: "I'm A Soldier" and "Magazine." Produced by founding Whigs Greg Dulli and John Curley.

Modern rock icons the Afghan Whigs' searing, muscular sound combined rock and soul with the swagger and emotional ferocity of lead singer/songwriter Greg Dulli. Nothing sounds quite like their raw, fiery brew, which has earned a large and loyal cult following over the years. One of the most critically acclaimed alternative bands of the'90s, the Whigs originally formed in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1986. An early self-released LP led to a multi-album deal with Seattle-based indie Sub Pop, and their riveting 1990 release for that label is where this compilation—their first—begins. -CP

The Cinematic Orchestra
Ma Fleur

TCO return with their first full-length since 2002's "Everyday". "Ma Fleur" was written as the soundtrack to a specially commissioned screenplay for an imagined film, which may or may not yet be made. Dealing with themes of loss and love, "Ma Fleur" is fertile ground for Jason Swinscoe's brand of raw-emotion music making. If the mood is melancholy, Swinscoe and company manage to make it an ultimately uplifting experience, perhaps in the end more about the love you find than the love you lose. Deluxe packaging: CD digipak with six photo postcard inserts and double LP 150 gram gatefold vinyl with full-color printed sleeves. -CP

Matthew Dear
Asa Breed

Matthew Dear’s Asa Breed finds the Detroit-based electronic artist achieving new artistic heights – it’s more robust, more accessible, and yet still undeniably Matthew Dear. Incorporating his uniquely crafted textures alongside international rhythmic influences, plus a lyrical storytelling element from his Texas upbringing, Asa Breed is a completely unique musical experience.

Since his debut at the decade's beginning, Matthew Dear has been championed as North America's brightest new electronic talent. His 2003 debut, Leave Luck To Heaven, garnered unequivocal praise from the likes of Rolling Stone, Spin and Entertainment Weekly, and in the period since, Dear has conquered the international techno scene under the alias of Audion. But when it came time to return to his roots, there was only one path to take.

With each track on this album, Dear tells a unique story about life and human relationships with his rich baritone voice and fusion of live and electronic instruments. In sum, Asa Breed represents a new feeling and a more expansive look into the psyche of an artist coming into his own. -CP

Daniel Higgs
Atomic Yggdrasil Tarot

CD version is limited to 4,000 copies and is a full color 48 page 6x8" hard cover book featuring the paintings and poetry of Daniel A.I.U. Higgs. The CD enclosed with the book is a full length album recorded in his home and is intended to be experienced with the book.

The LP version is limited to 900 copies and comes in a silk screened LP jacket (black ink on white jacket). The music is the same as on the CD. It comes with a black and white booklet featuring the poetry/anagrams from the book. The book does not come with the LP.

Daniel Arcus Incus Ululat Higgs is a musician and artist from Baltimore, Maryland on whose behalf superlatives are destined to fail. It’s not that his artistic output – spanning three decades, numerous albums, books of poetry and collections of drawings – simply eludes classification, it defies it. Often we hear that a true work of art is meant to speak for itself, and with the work of Daniel Higgs the maxim rings truer than ever. His art is of the cosmos, we on Earth merely lucky that it happens to be confined to our atmosphere, in our lifetime.

Higgs is known primarily for his work as the sole lyricist and frontman of the band Lungfish, a four-piece dedicated to charting, in this listener’s estimation, nothing short of the evolution of all species, known and unknown. That the band has undertaken this pursuit in the guise of a humble rock outfit, in the absence of any public relations fanfare, metanarrative, or manifesto has been enough to endear them to tens of thousands. They are enshrined as one of America’s last true folk bands, and Higgs anointed as a patron saint to artistic purity.

In recent years, Higgs has released a number of solo outings that can only be described as the ultimate in isolation, worlds away from the hypnotic, communal rock of his band. On Atomic Yggdrasil Tarot, Higgs weaves meditative, casually ruptured drones using acoustic and electric guitar, upright pianos, banjo and jew’s harp, recorded entirely at home on cassette recorder. He pairs the music with a series of paintings that call to mind religious iconography passed through the disfiguring surrealism of Miro.

Higgs has wedded his music and his visual art into a singular being, meant to be encountered as a conjuring force similar to that of the tarot experience. The yggdrasil is the great tree of Norse myth that connects all worlds of cosmology. Passing into Christian folklore, the tree is said to connect heaven and earth. In his relentless pursuit of the indivisible, Higgs travels up and down this spine and hatches a new transubstantiation of sound and image into life-form. -CP

The Long Blondes
Someone to Drive You Home

Debut album from the five piece Art-Rock band from Sheffield, England fronted by the sassy Kate Jackson. The Long Blondes came together through a series of chance encounters. Kate (lips), Dorian (licks), Reenie (hips), Screech (sticks) and Emma (high kicks) bumped into each other at public library counters, charity shop sale rails and the dancefloors of DIY club nights. It was deliciously inevitable that this lot would get together and form a band. The Long Blondes are the part of the next chapter of Sheffields idiosyncratic musical heritage: the suburban disco fantasies of the Human League, the opulent ridiculousness of ABC, the seedy glamour of Pulp. Rough Trade. 2006. Features twelve slices of glamorous Punk including the singles 'Giddy Stratospheres', 'Separated By Motorways' and 'Weekend Without Makeup' -CP

Marilyn Manson
Eat Me, Drink Me

Four years since his last studio album, and following up on his highest charting radio single ever ("Personal Jesus", from Lest We Forget), Marilyn Manson returns with "Eat Me, Drink me". Art openings, soundtrack appearances, and personal circumstance have grabbed headlines for Manson in recent months, setting the stage for the release of Eat Me, Drink Me, which is unquestionably the artist's most personal statement yet. Always the provocateur, in what may be the ultimate subversion of the code of aggro-rock, the songs are immediately catchy - all jagged guitar hooks, anthemic choruses, with an overlying glam-rock sheen. Lyrically Manson has never been more riveting, seemingly having enough to draw from in his own life and from society at large to present a fresh, snarling vision.-CP

Neurosis
Given to the Rising

Now in its third decade of innovative noisy psychedelic-metallic thunder, Neurosis is more than a just a powerful band-- it's a religious experience. As such, personal epiphanies are repeatedly told both by those who've been converted by Neurosis' sensory overloading live show and by those who've felt transformed while listening to the legendary quintet's recordings. Given To The Rising is both reflective of the aggressive pummeling for which Neurosis is known, as well as an exploration into psychoactive prog-rock and eviscerating symphonic heft that moves well beyond what we've all come to recognize as the "Neurosis note."

Given To The Rising is like being submerged in an isolation tank-- it envelops, subverting the senses with surreal visions we'd swear were our own, cleverly jarring and disorienting consciousness beyond any footing in reality. Just as any diehard Neurosis fan will tell you, there's a moment with every new record and live show at which the band stops as if the world has frozen in position, then suddenly kicks into a behemoth wail that forces one's head and shoulders to lurch and sway uncontrollably. Given To The Rising is a sound borne of that captivating and transcendent moment. -CP

Pelican
City of Echoes

Their third record is a series of (r)evolutionary instrumental ruminations on touring and the homogenous effects of globalization. With shorter songs and expanded catchiness, "City Of Echoes" is Pelican's "pop album". After exploring Earth's melodicism, Goatsnake riffery, and Hum post-rock textures, they've now decided to drastically reduce their song length and deliver a driving rock record. "One minute you're being sucked down by an undertow of surging, cascading guitar riffs and crashing drums, and the next you're being lulled to sleep at the bottom of an ocean of soothing ambience. -CP

Pissed Jeans
Hope For Men

Following on the heels of their monumental Don’t Need Smoke to Make Myself Disappear 7”, Pissed Jeans drop album number 2 and their Sub Pop debut: Hope for Men (we like to think of it in the “mankind” sense). For those who found a glimmer of the stuff on the aforementioned single (two pressings of which have sold out), the album delivers more, and in abundance. That is to say, if classic, thick-as-glue punk bombast and Aussie sludge stoke the coals of your existence, you have found, not only your new favorite band, but a reason to get up in the morning.

Since 2004 the Jeans have spent many a night playing in their hometown, no-rules hellhole, Allentown’s legendary Jeff the Pigeon (RIP). Their first single, “Throbbing Organ” and album, Shallow (both on Parts Unknown) set many self-styled punk scholars’ hearts a-flutter. Songs like “Ugly Twin” sent jaws floor-ward by including a plaintive piano part in a bruiser of a song. Such touches abound on Hope for Men. The album is diverse, but the Jeans ain’t no dilettantes. Mixing volatility with humor is a damned hard thing to master in music. Pissed Jeans do it with smarts and poignancy. Consider the bar raised. -CP

They Shoot Horses Don't They
Pick Up Stuff

Performing at The Boot August 15th.

They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? clearly state their intentions on “One Last Final Push” – the opening salvo of sophomore album Pick Up Sticks. Amidst an engaging racket, vocalist/guitarist Nut Brown cries, “We go on marching forward; Through all the silent faces; Sing! This noise! This drum! Well, here we come!” While often likened to a marching band, the six-member group actually shares a greater affinity with a nomadic, conquering horde. They’ve preyed upon unsuspecting crowds throughout North America over the course of several sprawling tours. At first glance, any of their frenetic live shows could easily be mistaken for a cult indoctrination. Time and again, their brand of tilt-a-whirl art-pop has transformed audience members into reveling, cavorting true believers. Founded in Vancouver, British Columbia in 2003, the embryonic They Shoot Horses consisted of Brown and drummer Julia. When Brown happened upon a series of sharp, punchy tones near the bridge of his six-string, he was reminded of horn bursts and inspiration took hold. A recruitment drive saw trombonist Pietro and saxophonist Ryan added to the fold, along with Robb on bass and Chris on keyboards. Melding oompah and folk with sonic experimentation akin to The Residents, Captain Beefheart and Pere Ubu, They Shoot Horses forged an idiosyncratic sound tailor-made for live performance. An unholy combination of madcap menace and big top bombast allowed their shows to assume the form of carnivalesque spectacles. An eponymous EP and debut full-length, Boo Hoo Hoo Boo, perfectly captured the crowd-pleasing, eccentric immediacy of their formative work. In turn, Pick Up Sticks sees They Shoot Horses moving away from their circus sound. Granted, the new album still boasts the band’s signature cacophony of regimental drums, jittery guitars, swirling keyboards and clattering horns. While the instrumentation remains constant, its implementation has changed dramatically. Where the band once assembled formidable walls of sound, they now craft songs of rich and varied texture. If ever there was a mould for They Shoot Horses’ oddball songwriting, the band made sure to irreparably break it for this album. Produced by Colin Stewart (Pretty Girls Make Graves, Black Mountain), Pick Up Sticks captures ten transfixing transmissions that could have either been beamed from outer space or unearthed in a time capsule from a lost age. A frantic beat, organ grinder melody and caterwauled chorus conspire to put a listener through the wringer on “A Place Called La.” Forlorn “Speck of Dust” finds the band mining melancholy while “What Is That?” flirts with sunshine pop. The audacious “Busted Bell” shoehorns an entire album’s worth of ideas into a single sprawling song. A spirit of experimentation and invention permeates the proceedings, making for a dizzying listening experience composed of expansive atmospherics and ever-shifting rhythms and dynamics. -CP

Various Artist
Box of Dub: Dubstep and Future Dub

The Box of Dub album features an all-star cast of dubstep pioneers: Skream, Burial, Tayo, Scuba, Digital Mystikz, Kode 9 and more. The album is a unique project for Soul Jazz Records, featuring all-newly recorded exclusive tracks of future dub and dubstep from key artists in the scene. After two killer Digital Mystikz singles on Soul Jazz Records last year and an amazing amount of publicity around the Dub-step movement, this album shows clearly the influences of original electronic dub pioneers such as King Tubby, Scientist and King Jammys on this new generation of artists and producers. Emerging out of South London, Dub-step has grown from its roots in Grime and Drum and Bass scenes to create a new movement of artists -- such as Digital Mystikz, Kode 9, Burial -- influenced by Sound-system culture as well as technology. With heavy bass-lines and complex drum patterns, this is dance music that also works for the mind, being both progressive and innovative (Burial's album was album of the year in The Wire, Observer and Guardian newspapers). With a distinctly UK urban sound, this new album also shows a nod towards Jamaican dub and electronic wizardry. -CP

Eccentric Soul: The Prix Label

Three years after the release of our landmark Capsoul collection, we return to the scene of the crime, Columbus, Ohio, to unearth their crosstown rival: The Prix Label. The tiny imprint released less than a dozen singles between 1969-1973, but one look at the Prix archives told us that the tape never stopped rolling. In addition to choice cuts from their catalog, we've included four previously unreleased masters and a slew of demos. Porter Wagoner
Wagonmaster

Porter Wagoner, with his trademark rhinestone Nudie suits, high-swept silver pompadour, rail-thin frame and spectacularly weathered face, is an instantly recognizable figure. However, as the striking new release WAGONMASTER makes clear, he is, as always, far from predictable. A resolute tradition bearer and Grand Ole Opry star since 1957, Wagoner's extraordinary far-reaching song catalog has also consistently pushed country music into new, often chilling directions, and WAGONMASTER boldly upholds his unusual approach. This set--recorded in three days flat--not only verifies the 79-year old Wagoner's still impressive capacity, it cements him as a commanding, relevant force in American music.

Presented and paced like a stage show, the album spins through tales of extreme mental anguish ("Be a Little Quieter"), blind romantic ardor ("Who Knows Right from Wrong"), back-hills hard times ("Eleven Cent Cotton"), powerfully delivered spiritual messages ("A Place to Hang My Hat," "Satan's River") and, with the strikingly offbeat "Albert Erving" and a fine version of the Wagoner-Dolly Parton collaboration "My Many Hurried Southern Trips," some sharply etched, rich glimpses of everyday life. -CP
