creative folk

Many of you already know who Shawn Creeden is. You may know him as the frontman for the Rochester New York hardcore unit, Bad Business, or as the multi-instrumentalist in Sparrows Swarm and Sing or his new band Upside-Down Cross. And if you have seen any of these groups live, you more than likely seen his art work.

Shawn will be having his second gallery exhibition in VA this year. He did one in Novemeber up in Richmond at the Nonesuch Art Gallery, displaying his drawings and embroideries of The Cape Verde Islands. This Friday, at Relative Theory, he will be displaying more work from his brushes, pens and needles in north/south. This is work of his that is showing life and death on and around the Polar Ice Caps.

Shawn is one of the nicest and most genuine people we have ever met and we are lucky to have the chance to work with him as many times as we have, as well as call a friend. The opening starts at 7pm and he will be performing live at 8pm. This event is free and we would love for you to be an attendance.

he fixes the cable

Well a darling little show we have here. The Editorial We are coming to perform at ye olde record shoppe and are bringing a couple frieds along with them. TEW are from ORF and they are solid - heartfelt lyrics, rock'n guitars, a drummer is tight in the pocket and a great frontman. What more do you need. Tokyo, whom you've heard us sing their praise many times before are Chesapeake's Coldplay or Radiohead with balls. They like when we say that about them and we don't want to upset them. They are fun live and are dashingly handsome too, LADIES! And speaking of ladies, the soothing Skye Zentze is on the bill as well, and her soft and elegant folk pop will make your heart smile and her tongue n cheek lyrics will have you laughing and thinking. Lastly, but not leastly, Phillip Usher & the House Floor are on the bill. I have not heard this guy yet, due to the evil myspace. It wont seem to load The House Floor's page. I hate Tom. Editorial Andrew said this guy is aces and I believe him, because he's the king. Show starts at 8pm, so wear comfortable shoes and bring a friend.

miss you river

You know how good you feel (read, cool) when you tell people you listen to Sonic Youth (did I read that somewhere?) Well, Indian Jewlery will make you feel the same way. They are from Texas and they are part of the noise wave scene there. Actually, I don't know if they are, but how cool would it be to have a noise wave scene in your town? Discuss. They remind me of Sonic Youth mixed with Suicide, topped up with a little acid, 30,000 pairs of black sunglasses, seran wrap and it makes my body want to move like Pig Pen in the Peanuts movies. Also on the bill is Skye Zentz, who's alias is Lady Goodman from Almost Famous, which starred Mark Kozelek as the bassist in Still Water, which is loosely based on the band Mammals. That part is a lie. The Mammals are a really fantastic contemporary folkish / bluegrassish outfit that is lead by Michael Merenda. Mr Merenda, is playing a few solo dates and will be performing at the record space. Lady G is also performing that night, so I am going to scream and holler for a duet, cause that's what I do - scream and holler.

I am real sorry about that paragraph. I just reread it and it makes me think I have ADD. Hopefully you were dreraming about the fictitious noise wave scene in your neighborhood and didn't even read it. Come out to the show. Yes, the acts are really good. Yes, I am this funny in person.

does anyone else smell bacon

The only thing heavier than this show is two dinosaurs bumping uglies. NOVA metal powerhouses The Seventh Gate are bring their eternal blackness to the record store and it promises to be the most brutal show we've seen since Khanate. Opening up is Three Faces if Eve and The Minus Men. How awesome of a band name is The Minus Men. I hope they play in uniforms.

does anyone else smell bacon

Phosphorescentis Matthew Houck and he has been making music for the Misra label for the past few years. He has a very wistful and somber tone in his music and is comparable to Will Oldham, Jeff Mangum and Bob Dylan. He is fresh off his tour of Europe with Castanets (who are his backing band on this show) and there will be a few surprise guests. You should plan on attending this one. It's going to be something special.

how bout yes

“What did it matter where you lay once you were dead? In a dirty sump or in a marble tower on the top of a high hill? You were dead, you were sleeping the big sleep, you were not bothered by things like that. Oil and water were the same as wind and air to you. You just slept the big sleep, not caring about the nastiness of how you died or where you fell.”em>

…As spoken by Humphrey Bogart in the 1946 film The Big Sleep. In less than a week (Wednesday Dec. 6) you have the opportunity to be exposed to the musical behemoth that is The Big Sleep. In its most literal sense The Big Sleep is, as you read, a reference to death. I personally prefer the latter part of that quote, past the death, the careless part. Not being bothered by anything around you, not being distracted by styles or people or what you will do next but just being caught up in The Big Sleep.

Based out of New York City (the best usually are) The Big Sleep are a three piece post-rock influenced psychedelic band. Their exact style is hard to lay a finger on, it can range from instrumental rock, Mogwai style, to a beautifully odd and completely original psychedelic masterpiece that incorporates effects and synths to the traditional three piece rock suite. At the store, the bands debut album Son Of The Tiger has been one of the most recommended albums this year, and i guarantee it will show up on many of the employees list of top albums in 2006. No description i write will give justice to their style, the energy conveyed in the debut record is a rare feat that tells you a live show can be nothing but incredible.

Wednesday, December 6th fall into the Big Sleep.

Also on the bill we have The Slats, fresh off of their new album Boom Patrol. I can not wait to hang out with these guys, just based on the music, it seems like they will be one of the most fun live shows Relative has had in a while. I predict fist pumping, large crowds jumping in unison, and lots of singing/shouting along. Think early Beastie Boys meet mid 90’s punk rock.

Finally, we have Snakes playing. This band is a early 90’s Dischord group stuck in the new millennium of Norfolk VA. Influences range from punk, to thrash, to good old alternative rock. This band will be perfect to get the crowd excited for one of the best shows we have had at the store.
