watch your mouth
I liked in “24 Hour Party People” when Tony Wilson, played by Alan Partridge
himself, Steve Coogan, points out that the story is not about him, the
protagonist. “I’m a minor player in my own life story” he says, or
something to that effect. That’s what I want to be. A minor cog
facilitating the gears of a major revolution. This is coming to fruition on
Friday with “The F Word.” I host Cabaret Delirium partly out of obligation,
because I am a martyr for local live comedy, much like Jesus, Joan of Arc,
or Robert Kelly, but less severe and focused on independent comedy. Now one
of my disciples (as I like to call anybody who has performed at or set foot
in the Bayside Inn, much to their consternation) has stepped out on his own
and put something amazing together. Finafuckingly.
Who imagined comedy and hip-hop coming together? Russel Simmons, Three 6
Mafia, everybody, and now Khori (pronounced “Cory”) Johnson. This character
is going to kill Trey Parker and Matt Stone with a more potent, concentrated
sip of their own iconoclastic comedic juice. Before that happens, he will
be doing a show at Relative this Friday.
The bill boggles the mind. Derrick Brooks’ delicious malaprops and
half-joke forgeries. Brendan Kennedy’s famous violent carpentry. Big
Brown’s continued translation of ingrained obsessions and fixations into
beautiful blue Warner Brothers storytelling. The exotic Afroindiejudaic
literary interpretations of Ty Bliss. And apparently me masquerading as a
VB Rave Warrior.
The entire circus will be presided over by the inimitable, unforgettable,
and unfuckwithable Black Viking God, capped by musical mayhem courtesy of
Manchi. I’m told their new shit is that fire. Never has such a gut
busting, block rocking, mind fucking, multimedia explosiaganza occured in
the 7 cities. Only on Friday at Relative! Only in America and/or
Edinburgh/Canada!

let's mash
This event is brought to us by XXX Booking and Promotions. Who's mission is to bring the mosh. They book talent from all across the state of VA and beyond. I think the band Swamp Thing has a cool name and I hope they don't suck. I would check them out, as well as the other bands on the bill, but I am listening to some Brian Eno right now on my headphones and I am not trying to fuck that up. See you in the pit?

la muerte de manolete
The Tripps have been making waves in the local musiic scene for over two years now. The band is a 4 piece collective that mixes elements of: Rock, Pop, Hip-Hop, New Jazz, and Blues into their style and live shows. In the last couple months this band has managed to do more than most local artists accomplish in their entire careers, including a 7 track demo album that will be released on sunday, 3 more songs recorded in one of Virginia's highest end studios, playing the NorVa, and still finding time to help out smaller independent businesses such as Norfolk's Borjo Coffeehouse. The best thing about the Tripps is that through all of this they manage to stay true to themselves and their music, by writing and performing exactly what they want and nothing else, a sense of throwing caution to the wind if you will. Their full band live shows are a marvel to watch and listen to as the band is tight and rehearsed while still carrying a sense of improvisation and letting the audience wonder where the songs will go next. The band was founded by singer-songwriter Sam Barrett in the post-SFN days , and now features other members such as musical genius and saxophone master David Cuffee (DC3), bass prodigy Cameron King, and drummer / orphan Greg Meekins, who also shares in the song writing responsibilities.
The first batch of the bands debut entitled "Branch Out" will be on sale during the show and in our store after the show. The 7 track album is overflowing with jazz undertones and latin influences on top of everything from straight forward rock songs with a plethora of deep lyrics, to songs featuring body moving beats, to more broken down and beautiful soft songs that really let the saxophone take the spotlight. The technical drumming and booming bass keep the band steady and create a rhythm section unmatched in the seven cities. "Branch Out" is probably the best debut i have seen by any local band thus far. The quality is major label status and the song choices are all worth the time and ears of the listener. Definitely pick this CD up on sunday or soon after.
Also gracing our stage this sunday night is the famed Dirty Projectors. This New York based collective is breaking the scene wide open with their ever so unique mix of experimental electronica mixed with traditional instrumentation and distant vocals. This may sound like a big mess to some, but the lush walls that these ingredients create are a force to be reckoned with. Font man and brains of the operation David Longstreth manages to accomplish everything from Prince style rock to synthetic string based pop ballads. This will prove to be one of the most interesting and fascinating shows we have ever had at our store.
Finally, the support for this behemoth of a concert is going to be local legends Foxtrot Rio and their 70's rock influenced, reverb drenched, guitar solo filled power ballads. Another band that came out of the SFN breakup and has since moved on to continue creating great music. If you have not yet had the chance to see this band live, then you have no reason not to be at Relative Theory this sunday. These guys only get better with every performance and more unpredictable with every antic.

la muerte de manolete
This show has been booked last minute and the line up is still unclear, but Newport News' Prisms will be playing the record store. I haven't heard of them until about an hour ago, but listening to there demo I am glad someone in VA is making this kind of music. Dreamy and distorted, these sound like My Bloody Valenine mixed with Nirvana on Lithuim. Good Stuff. Check our website for more details as they unfold
