empty churches .

Papercranes is the band of Rain Phoenix, sister to River and Joaquin. Her band is out of Gainsville Fl and while they bear hints of that country/punk swagger characteristic of Gainsville, they also remain influenced from ambient shoegazey stuff like Brian Eno and Spiritualized. Rain's voice pairs with the band so well that it takes me back to the days of Mazzy Star. The sound is not the same but the chemistry is there and I am reminded of it well. Dustin Hogue is closing out his stint as this month's Local Resident and if you haven't caught him yet we highly suggest you make it out early to this show. Austin Bowles is a young face fresh on the scene whose influences have little to do with his sound and more to do with his inspiration, except maybe for Gershwin. He's a piano singer/songwriter a bit like Billy Joel but with a softer bite. This show would go perfect with a big cookie!

super dirty .

Remember Super Dave Osbourne? I know his show was on Showtime and I vauguely remember actual episodes but I know his character better as it would show up in celebrity moments like the Superbowl Halftime Show or something. My guess is he is an American Idiot that would fake stunts for popularity. I am pulling from the memory of when I was 12 so he could have been the real deal, it is just my nature to doubt such tales of people in this country who are middle aged wearing tinted shades doing crazy ass stunts. Anyhow the point is this and this only. This show could kick Super Dave's motorcycle riding ass! This dirty ass punk rock could jump the Grand Canyon in a winnebago. Actually did Super Dave do that or was that Evil Knievel? This show is actually on par with Evil Knievel because 70s stuntpersons are entirely believable.

party times two  .

This is how you throw a rock dance party. Instructions: mix a little bit of synth with your favorite friends. After it sits at room temperature for 30 mins add a dash of punk. Then let it rise before putting the heat up to 350! This show will smell like sweaty teenagers. Its what Relative knows best. How far can we take this? Is anyone reading? I think you know if you want to come to this show. Check out the bands and come party.

fields of cathode rays .

This may be the noise show of the year. Groits are improvisational jazz noise outfit from NYC - they are students at NYU. Mouthus is on Important Records which is as the name implies. They are an extra terrestrial noise band. Yellow Swans has been the doing the DIY thing for years. I believe they are from Portland and run their own record label JYRK. They have had stuff on Load Records which is also a sonic specialty. Serpent is Doom or Drone. I suppose it depends on your desire for one or the other. Similar to Sunn O))) but more closely related to Khanate. Check out to see which style is your flavor.

earthquake love .

Radio Flyer is our Local Resident for this month and we will get the website updated as soon as possible. They are a post rock outfit whose style comes closest to Explosions In The Sky but less chamber music and more industrial. This Train Won't Slow Down is a rock soul band from Richmond Virginia whose bullets are of the finest caliber. They really have a Decibully vibe but more folk rock and less folk pop. I can pick parts of their sound apart but together it is just good rock soul gospel. These guys just put on a show that would tear any jubilee to the ground and burn straight through the nighttime. Cities is on Yep Roc and they just released a remix album which is quite awesome - you get a free copy of it when you buy a ticket to the show with your coupon from the last mailer. They had an Interpol vibe but their live show is much more energetic. Come out to have a party.

WED OCT 11, 2006

The Granby Theater

Time: 8pm

the forest of heartbreak .

Writing his own legend Jim Lauderdale is rambling the country in an effort to bring back the Honky Tonk Star! He gets out there and naturally dishes out his Nashville style and stirs his fans into a heep of screamin devotion. He's worked with and inspired all the contempory greats including Dwight Yoakum, The Dixie Chicks, George Strait, and tons more. He won a Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album of The Year with Lost In The Lonesome Pines and his been host of the Americana Music Awards for the past several years. His bluegrass style calls up Ralph Stanley and his lonesome country brings out George Jones. However his fire burns just like a young Johnny Cash. Opening for him is Jimmy Barret whose swagger has been lightinig up the Nashville scene for the past two years. Definitely not a show to miss.

Byzantine Selections
Aaron Wallis

Aaron Wallis, long time friend and rambling spirit, has produced a series of lithographs inspired N.W.A. He describes them as modeled after an illuminated manuscript or an old Byzantine bible. On one side is Easy-E or Ice Cue with a gold leaf halo and rays of angelic light coming from behind them. On the other side is a passage from one of their songs in old english script surrounded by angels, low riders, pot leafs, AK's ect. They are limited to like 20 prints each so they are super limited. Come in and check it out!
