My Flame Burns Blue

Release Date: 02/28/06
Label: Deutsche Grammophone
CD: $18.98 Sale $15.98
Elvis Costello's My Flame Burns Blue is a live album with the legendary Metropole Orkest, a 52-piece jazz orchestra from the Netherlands, recorded in concert at The Hague. A bonus disc offers a 45-minute suite from Il Sogno, Costello's first full-length orchestral work. The album alternates between imaginatively reinvented Costello favorites like "Almost Blue," "Clubland," and "Watching the Detectives" (arranged "in the style of a 1950s television theme"), Costello compositions seeing release for the first time on a Costello album, and unexpected collaborations. "This recording captures a very joyful evening at the North Sea Jazz Festival and collects together songs and arrangements that have been developed over the last decade," writes Costello in his detailed liner notes.

The Cuts
From Here On In

Release Date: 02/28/06
Label: Birdman
CD: $15.98
From Here On Out, is a stunning collection showcasing the bands delightful tunefulness on an album of fine tracks. Despite their obvious songwritting savvy and overt pop leanings, The Cuts pound away in such a non wimpy manner that theres no question what there making is genuine rock and roll music. They might just be the best exemplar of this kind of tuneful dynamism since the 70's heyday of artists like Nick Lowe, The Talking Head's, Sparks and The Shoes. Indeed, The Cuts could easily be destined for the same kind of mass appeal.

Genre: Rock
Engineer
Reproach
Release Date: 02/28/06
Label: Hex
CD: $11.98
Delivering their first full-length, Syracuse's Engineer attempt to hold back on all-out destructive cacaphony in order to build to penultimate climaxes of heavy thunder brutality. Thematically and musically tied as one piece of music the simple trappings of metal-noisecore like Coalesce and Anodyne merely provide a foundation, while Engineer take the reigns from there, and trample the masses.

Glazes Band of sailors includes former members of Gris Gris an actual hurdy gurdy man and a crew of others seasoned musical hands. All off to sea.

Soft Money

Release Date: 02/28/06
Label: Anticon
CD: $15.98
LP: $12.98
The head architect of Anticon's aural acropolis at long last offers his album-length debut, Soft Money. On 2002's 10 Seconds, Jeffrey "Jel" Logan created a long-playing ode to his first real love, the SP-1200 sampler, composed entirely of hand-picked snippets from over three decades of hip-hop. Soft Money takes the same meticulous approach but expands it both literally and conceptually. Though undeniably rooted in the boom-bap of hip hop, this is an ode to all good music, channeled through one man, his machines, and a little help from his friends.

Bruce Springsteen & E Street Band
Hammersmith Odeon London 1975

Release Date: 02/28/06
Label: Columbia
CD: $19.98
Until recently, only a few lucky concert-goers were able to experience the magical and sensational night of November 18, 1975 at the Hammersmith Odeon in London. As soon as Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band took the stage that night, the performance immediately became a classic and defining moment in history of the band, perfectly encapsulating the passion, the drama, the intensity, and all that embodies this extraordinary band. This concert almost became a mythical event to long-time fans; it was seemingly a fabled story about one of the most legendary performances in the band's illustrious career. Now, following the success of the release of the "Born To Run 30th Anniversary" box set, which featured a DVD film of this performance, the entire concert is now available on a special two-CD set, featuring over two hours of live music. This marks an important historical event for any fan of Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, as this is the first ever complete concert of theirs to be fully capture, on CD. This release is a must-have for any fan who wants to finally hear for himself and own a piece of this epic and historical event.

It Came From the Hills Vol. 1

Release Date: 02/28/06
Label: Magic Bullet
CD: $9.98
There once was a time when compilation CD's meant something other than cheap, promotional throwaways lining the parking lots of the Warped Tour. A time when like-minded artists and record labels would collaborate simply as a means to celebrate the diversity of their collective talents and share their sounds with one another's listeners as an organic way of getting their music heard. With the "It Came From The Hills" compilation series, Magic Bullet Records and friends from around the world are attempting to recapture the simplicity and purity of yesteryear, long before MySpace, aesthetic-based Cyclops Rock, and whoring yourself out in hopes of impressing 15 year olds.

Hank Williams
Straight to Hell

Release Date: 02/28/06
Label: Curb
CD: $18.98
A new album from Hank Williams III is always a revelation: first, because it came out at all (his relationship with his label is as stormy as the marriage of his legendary grandparents); and second, because of its content and execution. So it's something of a miracle to see a 2-CD set of some of III's most hardcore Hellbilly (as opposed to the relentless screaming of his Assjack), especially as a number of the songs had been scheduled to appear on his unreleased 2003 album Thrown Out of the Bar. Hank III calls the new offering--recorded mostly on a $500 machine, for a DIY sound--a "thrill ride into a life of sin." -Alanna Nash

Believer

Release Date: 02/28/06
Label: Verve
CD: $15.98
A follow-up to the highly acclaimed The Instigator, the new record is brimming with, as Blender said, "knock 'em dead songs." Already widely-loved for his work as frontman and main songwriter of the hard-charging rock 'n' roll quartet the Old 97's (of which he is still a member), The Believer takes its predecessor's achievements several steps further, with a dozen deeply felt, craftily melodic tunes that demonstrate the Texas-bred artist's knack for using accessible songcraft to address complex emotional issues.

Our New Orleans

Release Date: 12/06/06
Label: Nonesuch
CD: $18.98
Nonesuch Records is releasing a benefit album of newly recorded songs featuring artists from the New Orleans music community – across a wide variety of styles – to document the depth, richness and profound musicality of that unique city. Funds from the sale of the record, titled Our New Orleans, will be donated to Habitat For Humanity to aid those affected by the recent Hurricane Katrina disaster. A number of New Orleans’ best known musicians have been asked to record songs that are integral to their lives and that express their feelings about the city and the recent events there. Sessions began in New York on September 20, with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and the Wild Magnolias recording at Clinton Studios. Later the same day and on September 21, Allen Toussaint, Irma Thomas and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band recorded at New York’s Avatar Studios. Further sessions in October included Dr. John, Buckwheat Zydeco, and Randy Newman, among others. Nonesuch’s parent company – Warner Bros. Records – is donating all of the production costs for this record, as part of the Warner Music Group’s larger efforts on behalf of the hurricane victims. Many others involved in the project are also generously donating their time and services.

Chariots
Congratulations

Release Date: Mar 05
Label: Troubleman Unlimited
CD: $14.98 Sale $10.98
Chariots is the new band from the singer/keyboardist of Song of Zarathustra. Fans of Song of Zarathustra will recognize the signature, insanely harsh vocals- a trademark. The music is unrelenting, yet slightly melodic. The music is somewhat modernized, a little more polished, but not any less brutal or important.

Genre: Post Punk
Early Man
Closing In

Release Date: Oct 05
Label: Matador
CD: $14.98 Sale $10.98
Early Man are two Pentecostalists who discovered heavy metal at age 19 and were subsequently shunned for it. This explains a lot given the sheer reverence and horn-throwing excitement found on Closing In. It's a history lesson as well as a continuation of classic metal liturgy. This is straight-up rock riffs and metal melody and rhythm. "Four Walls" kicks off the record with a dead killer guitar line; "War Eagle" is Iron Maiden for these times; "Death is the Answer" picks up where classic Black Sabbath left off; "Feedin Frenzy" is a mid-tempo thrasher that wouldn't sound out of place on a Megadeth or Exodus album. Contrary to these descriptors, it is by no means a carbon-copy effort. This is serious without being over-burdened. There's an exuberance that defies irony and makes all 11 tracks sound fresh and invigorating. It may cause you to bite a hole in your lower lip while your foot kicks along with the bass drum--it's that kind of metal. -Robert Arambel

Kind of Like Spitting
In the Red

Release Date: Nov 05
Label: Hush
CD: $14.98 Sale $11.98
Coming quickly of the heels of their EP Learn, showcasing the largely overlooked songwriting talent of 60's folk iconoclast Phil Ochs, Kind of Like Spitting delivers a startlingly honest album, taking inventory of their own dynamic range as a band. Originally recorded and mixed in a five-day blur at The Hall of Justice with Chris Walla (Death Cab For Cutie), the first mixes simply didn't capture the energy of the songs. . Features David J (Bauhaus & Love & Rockets) on guitar and vocals.

Release Date: Feb 05
Label: Cruical Blast

The Mass deliver unto us a scalding blast of sax-assisted Crimson-meets-Slayer art|thrash|core worship, all light-speed riffing, shrieking vox and burly singing, jazzy tempo shifts, apocalyptic pop, and bloodthirsty dynamics. No-Wave, post-punk, thrash metal and math- rock are crafted together into a blast of avant-garde fury, but catchy goodness.

Mr David Viner

Release Date: June 03
Label: Dim Mak
CD: $11.98 Sale $7.98
The truest blues musician from London UK that sounds more like he's from the Mississippi delta than the streets of the most hyped rock capital of the world. On this album, he is backed by all the members of Soledad Brothers, Carrie and Jason from Von Bondies, and Hotel from The Kills. In the most compelling way, Mr. David Viner is able to howl the ghosts of Mississippi Hurt and Robert Johnson but equally wail like Jonathan Richmond from Modern Lovers or earlier Bob Dylan. This is a pop classic, one filled with eccentricities of earlier blues rennaissance and traditional country manifested in his brilliant guitar playing.

GIST is on deck first (they are an incredible math rock band from D.C.) A Roman Holiday is up next - they reside in Richmond but are from the 757 (alt rock in the name of Pavement) Locksley follows with their 60s era British Invasion sound (they are from New York and awesome like candy!) closing this rally down are locals Softstone (think Fiona Apple but less jazzy R&B and more piano fueled rock.

This is one of the biggest shows Relative has ever done. We couldn't afford to do it in our space. The Benzos have played here twice before and I don't have to tell you how incredible their live shows are. Think darker faster Coldplay with some Radiohead. You like? And if you haven't heard Benevento Russo Duo yet then you are blowing it kid! These two compare to a Medeski Martin & Wood but less traditionalism and more experimentalism. Incredible. Also locals Seamonter will be on hand and while they have not had to many live shows yet - they have mastered a sound like Galaxie 500 rather quickly.

What is the best thing that happened in the 90's - debatable answer: My Bloody Valentine and Jesus and the Mary Chain. You don't agree? Well thank the sweet lord that some people agree because these are the influences I enjoy hearing in a record store/venue. Asobi Seksu has played here twice before and last time it sold out so you might want to get your a$$ here early. Not to mention our popular locals Tokyo and Danatalie are on the sweet bill.
