Atlas Maoul
Mish Maoul

Release Date: 04/25/06
Label: Beggars Banquet
CD: $16.98

As benefits her globe-trotting lifestyle and influences, Middle Eastern singer Natacha Atlas continues to create a body of work that refuses to be neatly categorized.  Over the past decade, she has entrancingly fused North African and Arabic music with western electronic beats to produce a unique dance music hybrid.  This sound has constantly been fed by fresh musical passions and testing in new sonic settings.  With her latest, exciting album Mish Maoul, however, her career comes full circle to touch base with her roots.  The new album harks back in its sound and traditions to the music she grew up hearing in the Moroccan suburb of Brussels, particularly when the Golden Sound Studio Orchestra of Cairo makes its entrance.  It also reunites her again with Temple of Sound's Nick Page a.k.a. Count Dubulah, with whom she first worked in Transglobal Underground and who helped produce her very first solo album Diaspora (and many subsequent collaborations.)

Zeroes and Ones

Release Date: 04/25/06
Label: Thrill Jockey
CD: $15.98
Twenty years into the partnership, this band retains its youthful enthusiasm. The music has evolved greatly, but the spark and the drive remain the same on this, the first new record in six years. Zeroes And Ones is about the difference between gravity and floating away, reality or dream, looking for something to grasp or simply letting go. Theyve crafted the finest album of their long career. The guitar playing and song writing is elevated, the raw energy honed and undiluted by the passage of time. The band includes Janet Bean (Freakwater), Doug McCombs (Tortoise, Brokeback, Pullman), and Mark Greenberg (Coctails, Archer Prewitt).

Tree Colored See

Release Date: 04/18/06
Label: Mush
CD: $14.98Sale $9.98

Tree Colored See is a collaborative effort between Nobody (Elvin Estella) and Mystic Chords of Memory (Chris Gunst and Jen Cohen). Building off of successful guest appearances on each other's past releases, the trio began collaborating on the project in the spring of 2004. After a year-plus of road trips and mail-order production efforts, the result is a perfectly crafted blend of psychedelic hip-hop and sunshine folk-rock. Nobody proves himself a producer/arranger in the classical sense, using his sample-based tool set to create the foundations for the album. Chris Gunst continues to mature as a songwriter and along with partner Jen Cohen, adds wistful vocals and accomplished musicianship to each song. For those who have followed any of these artists throughout the courses of their respective careers, this album proves to bring out the best in each of the participants.

Starlight Mints
Drowaton

Release Date: 04/25/06
Label: Barsuk
CD: $13.98

Their love of archetypal pop and AM radio has provided, over the course of two acclaimed albums, a rock-solid foundation for a whole bunch of inspired unusualness, all baked to perfection under the hot Oklahoman sun. Their unique brand of instrumentally complex, surrealistically worded pop contains a blend of classic string arrangements, cheeky boyish vocals, catchy melody, and ornate surrealism. You might call it bubblegum psych. Church bells, horns, piano, violin, tambourine, triangle, synths, and sound effects complement the usual suspects of guitar, bass, and drums to paint a broad sonic palate.

Around / Songs and Other Things

Release Date: 04/25/06
Label: Thrill Jockey
CD: $15.98
Around picks up where the last one left off. Varied tones move effortlessly from melody to rhythm and are at once panoramic, pastoral, and atmospheric. Its largely an improvised record and features Toms old Neon Boys bandmate Billy Ficca on drums.

Songs and Other Things is his first vocal album in sixteen years and it includes instrumentation from Television bassist Fred Smith. This record finds Verlaine's songwriting at its most colorful. With so many years between this and his last vocal record, hes got a lot of storytelling to catch up on, which makes every track here a gem.

Drive By Truckers
A Blessing and a Curse

Release Date: 04/18/06
Label: New West
CD: $16.98 Sale $14.98

RECORD OF THE WEEK.The South has risen again and the Drive-By Truckers are leading the charge. “A Blessing and a Curse” is this neo-southern rock band from Alabama’s seventh cd, and one of those albums was a double cd concept album about the rise and fall of Lynyrd Skynyrd (“Southern Rock Opera”), so you know they are an ambitious bunch. Led by three singer-songwriter-guitarists, Drive-By Truckers are varied enough in their performances between hard edged rockers and melodic ballads to keep you interested over the long haul of this album of songs about debauchery, lost love and southern gothic philosophy.

The three singers proudly flaunt their southern accents over the densely layered electric guitars and pounding rhythm that make up their unique, signature sound. Patterson Hood’s voice is the most memorable with his straining but lovable high tenor. Mike Cooley and Jason Isbell’s voices are perfect change ups from Hood’s and some of their songs (“Easy on Yourself”, “Daylight” and “Space City”) are among the best on the album. The band rocks like a cross between AC/DC and early seventies Rolling Stones and the songs never stoop to sentimentality while they tell of broken relationships and the damage that results.

At the end though, is the song that provides the light at the end of the tunnel. “A World of Hurt”, with its spoken word verses is a masterpiece of positive thinking. “To love is to feel pain” concludes Hood, “The secret to a happy ending is knowing when to roll the credits, better roll them now before something else goes wrong” and as the steel guitars swirl around him, eventually his logics leads to this theory: “Its great to be alive.” It sure beats the alternative! -- Paul Shugrue

Tom Brosseau
Empty Houses Are Lonely

Release Date: 04/04/06
Label: Fat Cat
CD: $12.98 Sale $9.98
A collection of highlights from his recorded history to date, augmented by several new recordings, mostly recorded and produced by Gregory Page in San Diego and Poway, Empty Houses Are Lonely works as an introduction to Tom Brosseau's plaintive, eloquent and timeless music. It is a representation of Brosseau's early days in San Diego, Poway and Los Angeles, where he was affected by the various apartments, houses, rooms and hotels where he lived. Brosseau's natural songwriting talent is influenced by such artists as Nick Drake, Woody Guthrie and Cole Porter -- he can be hauntingly moody and atmospheric, and manages to avoid the typical verse-chorus-bridge song structures in his writing. The most notable ingredient in Brosseau's work is his voice which sounds eerily like a high-lonesome reincarnation of Jeff Buckley. High, limber and sometimes vibrato-tinged, it seems to hover between the masculine and the feminine.

Tibet cites this album as one of his 10 top records of all time.reconstruction of 19th century German art songs that float in a wash of blissed voice and electric guitar in an almost dreamlike fashion through a salon of her own invention. 7 years ago I walked into a house and watched Joel sing a version of Across 110th St by Bobby Womack and it sent me to my knees like an Italian soccer player. There was even an ordained minister there eradicating the devil from partygoers minds. Ki: Theory is on hiatus but Joel is about to find a plateau of his own. His stripped down singer/songwriter style bears honesty that feels like water in the desert. Plus Future Islands from North Cackalackie are bringing their dark electronic dance noise to our table - I can't wait to sprinkle some salt on my shoes.
