Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not

Release Date: 02/21/06
Label: Astralwerks
CD: $13.98 Sale $11.98
The reference points are wide and varied. Musically there's musical bit of The Stone Roses, Whats The Story Morning Glory?, and Nevermind. As catchy as those reference points are, it’s the lyrics that has won them this fiercely dedicated crowd. Mixing the observational storytelling of Davies and Weller crossed with the harsher documentary eye of Mike Skinner of the Streets and Ghost Town-era Specials.

Genre: Brit Rock

The Proposition

Release Date: 02/21/06
Label: Mute
CD: $15.98
Nick Cave composed the film's soundtrack in conjunction with Warren Ellis, his longtime Bad Seeds collaborator and multi-instrunmentalist frontman of The Dirty Three. Incorporating soft chamber pieces, ghostly moodscapes and whispered laments, these 16 tracks are as starkly beautiful as the landscape of the film. Story and music closely intertwined.

Chicago Underground Duo
In Praise of Shadows

Release Date: 02/21/06
Label: Thrill Jockey
CD: $15.98
The 9th Chicago Underground release and the fourth as a Duo, In Praise of Shadows finds cornetist Rob Mazurek and drummer Chad Taylor returning the focus to improvisation. While In Praise of Shadows is similar to Twelve Degrees of Freedom in concept the record deals with dyad relationships such as tension and release, space and density, sound and silence. It also plays with sonic contrasts, low tone and high tones as well as contrasting approaches juxtaposing free jazz with modern composition.

Let's just say it right from the start.Coldcut have made the best album of their long and illustrious career. It's not something you can say lightly, but there you are. Their production has never sounded better, their ideas have never been more varied or interesting, they've never had such a great cast if guests and then integrated them into their sound so well.

Das Oath
Mini LP

Release Date: 02/21/06
Label: Dim Mak
CD: $14.98
In case you’re not familiar with them, Das Oath are formerly “The Oath,” an American/Swedish hybrid punk/hardcore monstrosity. Members of a random assortment of big name bands (Charles Bronson, Devoid of Faith, Monster X, Mainstrike, Oil, and Holy Molar) come together every few months to write these ear-bleeders. Their style of hardcore is similiar to The Germs, Black Flag, or Void, but somehow without coming off as kids trying to live in the past. Rather than playing the same kind of punk the aformentioned bands did, these guys use their stellar musicianship to forge something altogether new. Hints of bands like Refused, Some Girls, The Locust, and Guyana Punch Line are fairly prevalent after a few listens. With only nine songs (at around 24 minutes), I’d say this album is a better introduction to the band than their self-titled full length. They recently released a one-sided LP with a live radio set on it, and that also represents them succinctly, but well. Das Oath have pulled off what so many punk bands never think to try, they’re writing old-school punk rock without ripping off the bands they learned from. -Ryan Aircraft

Destroyer's Rubies, weaves a narrative of loves won or lost, missed opportunities and artistic integrity familiar to long time Destroyer fans. Reassembling much of the band in 2002s spawling This Night, Destroyer Rubies is a return to the more expansive and sometimes jarring full band arrangments explored an Streethawk A Seduction.

Life's A Riot With Spy VS Spy

Release Date: 02/21/06
Label: Yep Roc
CD: $17.98
Braggs stark musical backdrop for the most part a roughly strummed electric guitar and even starker vocals belied a keen sense of melody and passionate, deeply humane lyrics. The albums opening track, The Milkman of Human Kindness, for instance, was a love song of the most compassionate variety, illustrating the very real humanist approach, which informs his music. It was an early indicator that Braggs work would be infused with genuine insight and humor, as well as a sustained and personal commitment to political and humanitarian issues.

DuBBuddies Mix Night
Fight For Your Rights
8 PM

This Monday [2/27]:
Our mix theme is for Black History Month. Make a mix about taking back what is rightfully yours. We will have a mix on the website soon entitled Inalienable Tuneage. Keep your eyes peeled as the artwork is almost finished.

What is DuBBuddies?

This is our weekly mix CD night. Bring a mix CD and trade it with a friend or meet someone new. It is every Monday night and the cafe runs special bargains, like $2 mixed lattes (any size, you pick the flavors). Sometimes we schedule a movie, a live show, or we just hangout. Come get into some new music.

SUPPORT YOUR COMMUNITY

It will grow and you can help.

Whoa! Our sixth newsletter appears right on schedule. You should have got your iTunes update only an hour ago (which is totally early) We are getting this webstore together slowly, my last email said quickly but really you will never know the difference. The inventory will be quite small but you will be able to buy items featured in the Music and Culture issues and most other new releases. It is our intention to grow into this thing and so far we are handling it quite nicely, I think. Feel free to write and tell us what you like or don't like it.
