Dear People,

Hello Hello. What issues do we wish to discuss today? Well first off I would like to say that Relative Theory is in need of some creative talents. We haven't posted or advertised for this yet so I figure we will drop the first notion in our weekly email. We are looking for writers, photographers, artists, and other expressable types. These are not paid positions as yet, more of the volunteer nature. If you see an artist you want to interview, all you have to do is ask. If you want to take photos at a show for our website, all you have to do is ask. If you want to write a record review, all you have to do is ask. If you want to design a flyer for an upcoming show, all you have to do is ask. So to sum up this declaration - this is me asking you to ask us if you can participate in all the lovely that we do. Please email us at relativetheory[at]mac.com

See you next week.

7 Year Rabbit Cycle
Ache Horns

Release Date: 04/11/06
Label: Free Porcupine Society
CD: $15.98

From founding member of Deerhoof. Ache Horns, the bands third full-length, was recorded over a six-month stretch of downtime in 2005 between tours. Imagine The Ex trying to break up a fight between US Maple and GodSpeed! You Black Emperor and youll begin to fathom what the band has achieved, thanks in large part to new members Stewart and Smith and stellar contributions from guests George Chen (K.I.T.), ambient noise artist Grouper and violist George Behringer.

Genre/Style: Rock / Experimental

Aloha
Some Echos

Release Date: 04/11/06
Label: Polyvinyl
CD: $13.98

Aloha loves a bit of everything but they don’t dabble here and there. They meld it all to make their own unmistakable noise on this their fourth album. Aloha makes warm progressive rock with a dreamy resonant aftertaste. The early genesis inspired four piece has skillfully crafted an ambitious and intriguing fusion of pop punk and jazz rock. A perfect laser show soundtrack for the art school set.

Genre/Style: Rock / Pop

Black Angels
Passover

Release Date: 04/11/06
Label: Light In The Attic
CD: $14.98 Sale $11.98
This release Relative Theory has been drooling over the past month. So freaking incredible and we hope this band gets bigger than Sam Cooke because they totally deserve it. They are awesome guys and their sound is a pulsating trip through the desert. Remember on the Simpson's when Homer ate that hot chilli and Johnny Cash was the voice of the talking coyote? Yeah like that. Passover does not let up on any track and it makes you feel like getting down with your tribal ancestors.

Genre/Style: Psychedelic Rock
Tom Brosseau
self-titled

Release Date: 04/11/06
Label: Loveless
CD: $15.98
Since the 2005 release of What I Mean To Say Is Goodbye, Tom Brosseau has garnered much acclaim from Chord, Harp, John Doe and Bonnie Raitt. On the heels of this success comes a re-release of Brosseau's 2001 CD The Blue Record, which has been unavailable for several years. All the songs have been re-mastered, and Brosseau has added five bonus tracks, three of which are previously unreleased. Used to Own a Rowing Boat is an outtake from the Goodbye recording sessions with Sam Jones, while The Young and the Free is a 2003 on-air recording from KCRWs Morning Becomes Eclectic with Nic Harcourt.

Genre/Style: Folk
Built to Spill
You In Reverse

Release Date: 04/11/06
Label: Warner Bros
CD: $14.98
Built To Spill returns with its long-awaited album, the
first in five years. Putting aside extensive overdubs and an atmosphere sweep, You in Reverse captures the organic, loose, impromptu feel of the band's jams.

Genre/Style: Rock
Calexico
Concretes In Color

Release Date: 04/11/06
Label: Quarterstick
CD: $14.98
LP: $15.98

Where the open blue skies of the landscapes they
chronicled were tempered by the amokey dark blues of their jazz influences Garden Ruin is musically brighter. Lyrically too, the album takes a left turn in which contemporary rather than mythical America is addressed. Put succinctly, Garden Ruin is where Calexico fill those dusty empty landscapes they documented with a big big sound.

Genre/Style: Rock / Americana

Crystal Skulls
Outgoing Behavior

Release Date: 04/11/06
Label: Suicide Squeeze
CD: $13.98

Instead of angular post-Fall inspired riffage or the art-
damaged tones of their angsty Seattle neighbors, these boys have studied their AM radio classics, finding as much in common with Donald Fagan as contemporary homeboys The Sea And Cake. With a bite of George Harrison's guitar and a nip at Stereolab's rhythms, last years debut Blocked Numbers was a true pop pleasure. This, their follow-up, channels a cocky hint of Meat Is Murder-era Smiths and sits on a treasure chest of songs that Todd Rundgren would gladly drop trou for. Vocalist Wargo's nu-lounge swagger carries his well- honed band through eleven tracks of smoky AM glory.

Genre/Style: Rock / Pop

Timmy Curran
Citsuca

Release Date: 04/11/06
Label: Record Collection
CD: $7.98

Heralded as one of the true leaders of modern
progressive surfing, Curran spent the last seven years on the WCT competing with the worlds top surfers. His extraordinary abilities transcend the confines of the ocean, as hes already known for his talent as a musician and songwriter in the surfing community. This is his 6-song debut EP.

Genre/Style: Rock

Eagles of Death Metal
Death By Sexy

Release Date: 04/11/06
Label: Downtown
CD: $13.98

The Dream Boys duo is back! This Joshua Homme produced album sounds exactly the way God intended live rock and roll to sound - raw, sleazy, and spiffy. Its more hook laden than your old job at the bait shop. Put your dancing shoes on for a skuzzy sexed up and
danceable brand of rock and roll.

Genre/Style: Rock / Garage
Brian Eno / David Byrne
My Life in the Bush of Ghosts

Release Date: 04/11/06
Label: Nonesuch
CD: $14.98

Highly Recommended. Brian Eno and David Byrne's My Life in the Bush of Ghosts appears downright visionary. With its "found" vocals, cut-and-paste arrangements, funked-up rhythms and embrace of influences from all around the globe, the duo's controversial work anticipated the creative cross-pollination and technological innovation of contemporary dance music, world music, hip hop and alternative rock.

Genre/Style: Experimental / Pop / Dance
Feathers
self-titled
Release Date: 04/11/06
Label: Gnomonsong
$13.98
Feathers are an eight-piece collective musical ensemble, currently based between Northampton, Massachusetts and Brattleboro, Vermont. Formed in 2003 by Kyle and Kurt (first names only, please) at a Northampton record store, they were quickly joined by Shayna, Meara, Asa, Ruth, Greg and Jordan (more or less in that order). There are five primary songwriters, each with a unique style, and four singers. All eight musicians switch around on numerous instruments, loosely playing what can be described as psychedelic folk. Their debut album, now issued on CD for the first time via Gnomonsong, features simple strummed guitars, delightfully sweet harmonies, lysergic electric guitar, and tribal drumming, with a swirly folk vibe throughout. The group seems to draw inspiration from the same magical, natural forest elements that motivated Incredible String Band and Comus to release their own classic music in decades past. Yes, songs about forest creatures and loving the moon are contained
herein.
Genre/Style: Folk / Psychedelich
Field Music
self-titled

Release Date: 04/11/06
Label: Memphis Industries
CD: $14.98

Hailing from the same celebrated North East (Britain)
scene that spawned The Futureheads and Maximo Park, Field Music add something more cerebral to the spiked Mackem brew. Comprising a core of three members and an ever-shifting crew of local luminaries, Field Music are something of a North East supergroup. Peter Brewis was The Futureheads' original drummer; Barry Futurehead was in one of the many early Field Music line-ups and sometime drummer Tom English is on loan from Maximo Park. Their pop is huge, loaded with melody and harmony, and perfect for fans of Big Star, Modern Lovers, My Bloody Valentines, Neptunes, etc.

Genre/Style: Pop / Rock
Josephine Foster
Wolf In Sheep's Clothes

Release Date: 04/11/06
Label: Locust
CD: $14.98

Over the course of just a few years, Foster has
captivated audiences and critics alike through a magnetic patchwork of recordings ranging from broken spirited balladry (Born Heller) to fiery psych rock gestalt (All The Leaves Are Gone) to the voice of an outsider folk siren (Hazel Eyes, I Will Lead You). The one constant is the utterly overwhelming strength and seductive unease of her voice and the bravery of an iconoclastic spirit. A deeply absorbing, magical reconstruction of 19th century German art songs that float in a wash of blissed voice and electric guitar in an almost dreamlike fashion through a salon of her own invention. She makes a case for German as one of the previously unknown romance languages.

Genre/Style: Singer / Songwriter
Growing
Color Wheel

Release Date: 04/11/06
Label: Troubleman Unlimited

CD: $13.98
LP: $16.98
Limited Edition Price: $29.98
Their fourth album sounds like a symphony. Growing is taking their place in the world of heavy ambient drone alongside the likes of Sunn and Khanate. If Growing was the soundtrack to every Jacques Cousteau movie I would rapidly buy those dvds. I actually already own them so I will just watch with Growing in the background. cest la vie.

Genre/Style: Rock / Drone / Experimental
Jesu
Silver

Release Date: 04/11/06
Label: Hydrahead
CD: $11.98
Justin K. Broadricks impressive and storied musical past includes the names of underground heavyweights like Napalm Death and Godflesh, alongside revered avant/industrial pioneers Techno Animal and Ice, but after nearly two decades of diligent stereophonic thrill- seeking, Broadrick has found his true calling in Jesu. This EP is an electro-psychedelic symphony born of the pastoral majesty found around his country home near the English/Welsh border. An icy-sweet combination of tidal guitar resonance and sweeping electronic atmosphere, the four epic tracks within comprise a panoramic snapshot of Broadricks stunning sonic prowess.

Genre/Style: Drone / Experimental
Lambchop
Decline of Country and Western Civilization Part II: Woodwind
Years

Release Date: 04/11/06
Label: Merge
CD: $14.98
This release is a collection of A-sides, B-sides,
compilation tracks, and unreleased songs in a chronological compendium of a golden age in their career. Spanning 1994 to 1999, Decline centers around the weather worn and haunting voice of Kurt Wagner, the one constant in a band that numbers as many as twenty and as few as four, depending on the time or place. Discover a fertile musical history where Lambchop ties together influences as diverse as Porter Wagoner, Curtis Mayfield, and the Velvet Underground with contemporaries like Giant Sand, Vic Chesnutt, and Sonic Youth.

Genre/Style: Rock / Country / Experimental

You Are There

Release Date: 04/11/06
Label: Temporary Residence
CD: $13.98
'Throughout their six-year career, this Japanese quartet
has ascended consistently in both popularity and critical acclaim. But still elusive is the successful translation of their powerful and violently beautiful live performances to their recordings, until now. Once again recorded by Steve Albini, the album extends the cinematic drama of 2003's Walking Cloud And Deep Red Sky, Flag Fluttered And The Sun Shined while surpassing the sinister heaviness of 2002's lauded One Step More And You Die. If Walking Cloud was a nuclear winter, then You Are There is the post-war rebirth. This band isnt heavy like Black Sabbath. Theyre heavy like Beethoven.

Genre/Style: Post Rock / Experimental

Tom Moulton
A Moulton Mix

Release Date: 04/11/06
Label: Souljazz
CD: $21.98
LP: Vol. 1 $24.98 Vol. 2 $24.98

Tom Moulton is one of the most important people in the history of dance music. From inventing the first ever 12" single to remixer to the stars, the trademark A Tom Moulton Mix is a mark of quality given to only the finest records -- From Grace Jones' seminal 'La Vie En Rose' to the million-selling MFSB disco anthem 'Love Is The Message,' to over 4000 remixes. Tom Moulton began his career in the early 1960s as a promotions man at the legendary R'n'B label King Records, home of James Brown, Little Willie John, Hank Ballard and The Midniters and many more. In the 1960s he also began a career in modelling that would run parallel to his music. In 1971, he visited New York's Fire Island, the infamous gay holiday resort where he describes seeing 'white men dancing to black music' for the first time. It was here that Tom Moulton first began splicing up tapes for the discotheque.

Release Date: 04/11/06
Label: Jagjaguwar
CD: $13.98 Sale $10.98

This Brooklyn trio combines tumultuous noise with
enormous, triumphant melodies. Malfunctioning electronics howl in agony, drums rupture like fireworks, battle cries are belted through a monolithic layer of distorted bass and guitar. P&L revel in day-glo noise, charred drones, punk velocity, and phoenix-like hooks; a unique blast influenced by the clamor of Husker Du, the bluster of Boredoms, and the homemade spirituals of Neutral Milk Hotel. This is a pop record that yowls like noise, and a noise record that captivates like pop.

Wilderness is an unconventional band from Baltimore
whose apparent musical pedigree stems from the like of The Fall, This Heat, Savage Republic ,Public Image Limited and Joy Division without sounding like any of them and whose music is every bit as spiritual as it is visceral as nuanced as it is overt and as communal and all embracing as it is culturally alienating and nihilistic. Vessel States is sure to fortify the critical acclaim.

Carter Administration
Air Guitar Force One

Release Date: Sept 05
Label: Theory 8
CD: $10.98

One of Nashville's longest running trios have captured
10 of their best tracks for their debut full length released by theory 8. The entire album's sound can be summed up with a lyric from the title track..."I've got my degree in rock n' roll". The Carter approach to songwriting focuses on simple hooks and sing along choruses. The Tennessean describes them best, "The Carters could go toe-to-toe with Fountains of Wayne in a battle of tenacious harmony- hooks, and with fellow locals Kings of Leon in scratch-and-grit guitar style. Seasoned Intimidator sounds like the band's funneled returned Nashvillian Ben Folds' vocal hooks onto a Thin Lizzy guitar chug (and man does it work)...it is a fantastic collection of rock 'n' roll that leans on remarkable songwriting above an easily marketable style." If you find yourself overexposed to flavor of the month indie fodder and need to remember what amazing rock music sounds like, Air Guitar Force One is the album for you. For fans of Tom Petty, Sebadoh, AC/DC, Spoon

Soft Money

Release Date: Feb 06
Label: Anticon
CD: $15.98 Sale $10.98

The head architect of Anticon's aural acropolis at long
last offers his album-length debut, Soft Money. On 2002's 10 Seconds, Jeffrey "Jel" Logan created a long-playing ode to his first real love, the SP-1200 sampler, composed entirely of hand-picked snippets from over three decades of hip-hop. Soft Money takes the same meticulous approach but expands it both literally and conceptually. Though undeniably rooted in the boom-bap of hip hop, this is an ode to all good music, channeled through one man, his machines, and a little help from his friends.

Army of Me gave Relative Theory their first van! We never got to drive it though. We thought we would try and fix it but then the city took it away. Hopefully it was sold at an auction to a prepubescent harmonica slaying teen. No grass. No pass. I dont know what this means. All these bands are good. I will say I know all three acts but have never seen them perform. If you like R.E.M. - They Might Be Giants - Arcade Fire - Dar Williams. That crazy rock.

First let me say that this show is highly anticipated. We have Carol Bui which has a classic 90s alt rock sound like Belly meets Tortoise and it is female fronted. It is really a downer that the female doesnt rep the rock world with much strength but it is an upper to find acts like Carol Bui carving her path. Now opening this show is Kamikaze Shake. These guys are from Chesapeake, have an awesome name, and their sound is rad! Seriously this local band will not be here for long. Relative Theory is going to do everything we can to get this bird off and flying. These guys kick the door in when they get to the party!

This is for better or worse a backup art show. Is it professional to unveil this information. Eh, we are fairly unconcerned. So rather than have blank walls we are priniting out our favorites and putting them on display. You should go to the site and see which ones you like and then see if we picked it. Will this be fun and enjoyable? I think that depends on you.

Come On Out

DuBBuddies Night
Spring is in the air!
8 PM

Next Monday [4/10]:
Our mix theme is juvenile - Pick music that talks about being irresponsible and youthful. You know, music with cuss words!

What is DuBBuddies?

This is our weekly mix CD night. Bring a mix CD and trade it with a friend or meet someone new. It is every Monday night and the cafe runs special bargains, like $2 mixed lattes (any size, you pick the flavors). Sometimes we schedule a movie, a live show, or we just hangout. Come get into some new music.

SUPPORT YOUR COMMUNITY

It will grow and you can help.

Dynomite! Our thirteenth newsletter appears right on schedule. Spring is here and we are stoked with all the new changes here at the store. Man this newsletter was a beast - so was the hangover I had this weekend. Has anyone ever been to a midnight pig pickin' and stumbled across moonshine held by a husky German knife lover? Well Norfolk just got more exciting. Anyhow you dont know what I am talking about but when the Husky Boy Party Scene goes live it will all make sense.
