Dear People,

We are trucking along with wonderfulness. Have some new ideas for web stuff but no time to work on them. There is a forum started by the makers of Grow called Pretty Tasty. You should go there and check it out, maybe sign up and post a topic. It would be nice to see this develop into a useful community message board. The trouble with the internet is the ease with which these things are created so there becomes no centralized effort (the whole more blogs than blog readers issue). Anyhow because of who is behind this message board it will cater to your needs and ideas will develop quickly. That being said feel free to suggest ways to make Pretty Tasty even more useful because I am sure Grow will eat up quality suggestions. That's all people, have a beautiful day and see you at The Norva tonight for Stellastarr and Editors (also Mobius Band is opening and they are nice!)

Tom Brosseau
Empty Houses Are Loney

Release Date: 04/04/06
Label: Fat Cat
CD: $12.98 Sale $9.98
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! A natural songwriting talent coming from such disparate influences as Nick Drake, Cole Porter, and Woody Guthrie, Tom sings songs of lost love and poetic observation that shimmer like aural tintypes. Ostensibly a collection of highlights from his recorded history to date, augmented by several new recordings, Empty Houses Are Lonely works as a fine introduction to Tom's plaintive, eloquent, timeless music. The ingredient in this mix that will flat out give you chills is Brosseau's voice, which sounds eerily like a high-lonesome reincarnation of Jeff Buckley. High, limber and sometimes vibrato-tinged, it seems to hover between the masculine and feminine. His playing elicits a hushed reverence from admiring listeners blessed with the intimacy and emotional immediacy of his live performances. His songs have the quality of an intimate conversation at the next table that you just can't pull your ear away from. He can be hauntingly moody and atmospheric, and avoids the typical garden-variety verse-chorus-bridge song structures in his writing. Tom Brosseau is on to something new by way of something old -- deep, heartbreaking, and entirely worth hearing.

Ani Difranco
Carnegie Hall 4.6.02

Release Date: 04/04/06
Label: Righteous Babe
CD: $15.98

A precious live recording of Ani DiFrancos solo
performance on April 6, 2002. Exposition style song introductions and anecdotal musings elevate this show into a masterful performance. DiFrancos powerful set is politically relevant and sonically scintillating. Unlike prior live recordings, this one is unparalleled in its intimacy. For the first time, Ani recites the epic poem self evident to an audience of New Yorkers, which she describes as one of the most intense moments I have ever experienced on stage. Still breathing the dust of their broken skyline, this recording captures a moment in history where art holds space for humanity.

Flaming Lips

Sometimes a revolving lineup is a good thing. For the latest and seventh HiM album, Antibalas founder Martin Pera and trumpet player Jordan Mclean joined in the fun, as well as Need New Body bass player Griffin Rodriguez, and singer Christian Dautresme. Together with the core of Doug Scharin (Codeine), Adam Pierce (Mice Parade), and Josh Larue (Sorts), the band stayed in Japan after their tour for recording sessions in Tokyo. The resulting mayhem brings
burning African song structures alongside Sun Ra-esque vocal parts, pushed by an unparalleled rhythm section and covered by a soothing pop umbrella... not a typical album by any stretch.

'Ringleader Of The Tormentors' is the eighth album from the iconic Mancunian vocalist Morrissey. In a departure from his previous albums, Morrissey has chosen to incorporate Morricone-esque strings and arrangements into these songs. This makes for a sound that is both sweeping and cinematic, however, his usual themes of rejection and redemption are as prevelant as on his 2004 "comeback" album, 'You Are The Quarry'. Georgia Anne Muldrow
Worthnothings

Release Date: 04/04/06
Label: Stones Throw
CD: $11.98 $8.98
Georgia Anne Muldrow is one of Stones Throw Records newest signings, and is the only female vocalist signed to the label. In line with the label's other multitaskers (ie. Madlib, J Dilla, Oh No and lately Koushik and Aloe Blacc), and inspired by solid '70s soul, free jazz and a bottom-heavy hip-hop thump, Georgia paints a unique musical canvas that has the underground stopping to gaze and take it all in. It's just one 22-year old woman behind such a breadth of sonic expression -- she does her own vocals, background vocals AND the beats. Georgia springs from a family of creative musicians, whose roots run deep in the '60s and '70s progressive jazz scene: her father invented instruments for Eddie Harris, and her mother performed with Pharoah Sanders. Their innovation passed to their daughter, who approaches her labyrinth of keyboards, synthesizers and various instruments with a fresh perspective every time. Her colorful, stream-of-consciousness sound got noticed early on by fellow L.A. space-hop trendsetters Sa Ra, as well as Detroit's Platinum Pied Pipers -- both of whom tapped her for collaborations.

You Don't Know Me - Songs of Cindy Walker

Release Date: Mar 06
Label: Dreamworks Nashville
CD: $15.98 $12.98

All songs were written by Country Music Hall of Fame inductee (1997), Cindy Walker. At 87, she has a long list of writing credits to her name, which include: "Dusty Skies" recorded by Spade Cooley, Bob Wills, & The Sons of the Pioneers, "Cherokee Maiden" recorded by Bob Wills, Merle Haggard, & Mel Tillis, "Warm Red Wine" recorded by Ernest Tubb and George Jones, "You Don’t Know Me" recorded by Elvis Presley, Ray Charles, Jimmy Dean, Henry Mancini, & many more The single, "You Don’t Know Me" was made most famous by Willie’s close friend Ray Charles on The Modern Sounds of Country and Western Music. "I loved her music," Nelson says of Walker's catalog of playful saloon songs and heartfelt ballads. "Even before we met I felt like I knew her from listening to Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys do her songs. Every night of the week as a teenager I was playing things like "Miss Molly" and "I Was Just Walking Out The Door" somewhere.

Minus 5
self-titled

Release Date: Feb 06
Label: Yep Rock
CD: $15.98 $11.98

The Minus Five has always been witty popmeister Young Fresh Fellow Scott McCaughey's baby, first and foremost. And you could say that child reaches total excellent maturity on "The Gun Album," the band's seventh full-length, although it sounds silly to say it that way. McCaughey is of course a "fifth member" of R.E.M., a decent day job but one that's kept Minus Five albums in the "side project" realm for too long. But this is the album that stands on its own, the slightly twisted and wry lyrics perfectly accompanied by tasteful but not too tasteful chamber-rock throughout. And then there's the assembled cast. If you're going to do the guest artist thing you might as well do it right, and McCaughey assembles the
indie-rock version of a Missy album here. Of course you're got longtime collaborator Peter Buck, but there're also all the dudes from Wilco on one song, with Colin Meloy, Sean Nelson, John Wesley Harding, and Kelly Hogan joining in on others. --Mike McGonigal

Forget Cassettes
Instruments of Action

Release Date: Aug 03
Label: Theory 8
CD: $10.98

The fifth release from theory 8 comes from Forget
Cassettes, a female fronted 2 piece out of Nashville, TN. The band has managed to redefine the words "stripped down sound" by producing one of the biggest sounding records ever. Their sound is complicated, with vocal stylings in comparison to sleater kinney or perhaps pj harvey and yet, they offer complex song structures in the vein of bands like q and not u. The album was recorded by Mike McCarthy, producer for ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead and Spoon. The Nashville Rage states "Every song on the record benefits from complex, twisting arrangements that frustrate the verse- chorus-verse standard. This combined with the band's ability to switch from quiet meditation to full-on rock riff show off their careful musicianship and will to make rock music just as complicated and expressive as the subjects of their lyrics". For fans of: Sleater Kinney, Q and Not U, Karate.

True love.

I remember when Grizzly Bear first played the record store and it was truely one of the best shows to ever grace the stage RTR. Their second performance was plagued by the booty bass from Time but was still exceptional. Now they are back and we are terribly excited. Terribly! because they are with a band that actually makes teenagers fall in love - it is like that fairy dust shit in Willow where the brownie falls in love with the cat! VOXTROT! Which came first - Voxtrot or the picnic? You think this is an easy question but I think Voxtrot has been around for centuries making picnics more wonderful everyday.
