Dear People,

A couple things to address which might be of interest to you. One - we have last FM on our site which you may know of since you visit regularly. This tells you what we are playing in the store and you can be friends with us through the last FM network, similar to myspace. Two - we are going to stream this audio play using the program Nicecast - you dont need Nicecast to hear it - iTunes will be fine - just click the link we provide and you can hear whatever we are playing in the store at that moment. Cool, right? Not as cool as Moustache May! The celebration started yesterday and Relative will be representing with dedication and the tenacity of an ass kickin canyon rider. This is a fun fun thing but it has other purposes as well. Check out The Imperial Herr Neas. He has set up a charity through First Giving - phenomenal idea! Last but not least I want to remind everyone of our Friday event. We are showing Earthlings and this is a very important film and proceeds will go to SNiP (Spay or Neuter Immediately Please!). The showtime has been moved to 8 PM so be sure to get here around 7:30 - if you cannot make this showing we will be showing it a second time next week either Thurs or Fri. Stay tuned to our website or just wait for next week's Music and Culture Update.

Black Keys
Chulahoma

Release Date: 05/02/06
Label: Fat Possum Records
CD: $10.98

A Relative Theory favorite. Recorded by the band in their own Akron, OH studio The Black Keys epitomize DIY. Chulahoma is a collection of songs that were originally written by the late Junior Kimbrough, reworked and recorded, The Keys capture every essence of Juniors style better than any other musician today. Roomy and sparse in production the drums / guitar duo fill out every inch of these songs with distorted guitar, drum's and Dan's soulful vocals.

Genre/Style: Rock / Blues / Garage

Charlatans UK
Simpatico

Release Date: 05/02/06
Label: Sanctuary
CD: $18.98

The first U.S release in five years from the Charlatans U.K finds the band reestablishing itself as one of the legendary Brit Pop bands. By combining the swirling guitar psychedelica that has influenced everyone from The Stone Roses to Oasis and updating their sound to incorporate hints of dub and reggae, SIMPATICO. is an album that finds the Charlatans UK dancing with brilliance on a most welcome comeback.

Genre/Style: Rock / Brit Pop

Decoder Ring
Somersault

Release Date: 04/25/06
Label: Bella Union
CD: $13.98
Somersault is the soundtrack and score of the Australian produced film of the same name. As critically acclaimed in Australia as any film in the country's history, Somersault also made media darlings there of it's composers, Decoder Ring. On the first play it'd be easy to dismiss their meanderings as textbook sonic cathedrals, a gentle cousin to Sigur Ros, Air, Mogwai or My Bloody Valentine.

Genre/Style: Post Rock / Ambient / Electronic
Manu Dibango
African Soul: Very Best of

Release Date: 05/02/06
Label: UME Imports
CD: $11.98
Best of from Cameroon's, and perhaps Africa's, best-known jazz saxophonist kicks off with is most famous song, "Soul Makossa" - the first Afrobeat song to become an international smash.

Genre/Style: World / Afrobeat / Jazz
Human Television
Look at Who You're Talking To

Release Date: 04/25/06
Label: Gigantic Music
CD: $13.98
Haters will accuse Human Television of being unoriginal, and I guess they’ll be right. But, honestly? Fuck that. They’ve placed their influences squarely on their sleeves and made a pitch perfect summer record like I haven’t heard in years. And if that’s not enough for you, I think you’re skinny little tie needs loosening. -Mike Conklin l magazine

Genre/Style: Pop / Rock
Christian McBride
Live at Tonic

Release Date: 05/02/06
Label: Ropeadope
CD: $18.98

The first new release in three years from the Grammy Award- winning bassist is his most electrifying project yet. He's joined by his ace band featuring Geoffrey Keezer on piano and keys, Ron Blake on tenor and soprano saxophones and flute and Terreon Gully on drums, plus an all-star cast of special guests including Charlie Hunter, DJ Logic, Eric Krasno (Soulive), Scratch (Roots) and many more. The reulting three hours plus of music is a kinetic firestorm delivered by master musicians utterly unafraid of pushing jazz to it's furthest frontiers and updating it's concept with contemporary forms of hip-hop, funk and soul.

Genre/Style: Jazz / Funk

Pearl Jam
Self-Titled

Release Date: 05/02/06
Label: J Records
CD: $18.98 Sale: $16.98

Pearl Jam has officially announced their eighth studio album Pearl Jam will hit the stores on May 2, 2006. The album, which included such songs as Comatose, Life Wasted, Come Back, Gone, and Army Reserve, has had only two of the new songs performed in concert, Comatose (originally titled Crapshoot Rapture) was premiered live in concert in March 2005, and Gone was debuted in a solo performance by Eddie Vedder at a Pearl Jam concert in October 2005. Eddie has made previous statements that he wants the fans to hear the songs on the album first. In many instances, the members of Pearl Jam have revealed that they regard this as their best work to date, as it resembles the raw energy of their first albums.

Genre/Style: Rock

Bobby Previte
Coalition of the Willing

Release Date: 05/02/06
Label: Ropeadope
CD: $16.98

Charlie Hunter puts down his 8-string guitar and picks up a Fender Telecaster and a Fender Bass for the first ever on record; Steve Bernstein and saxophone magicain Skerik blast through the Sex Mob trumpeter's horn arrangements; Stanton Moore (Galactic) lends his deep New Orleans percussive funk; Jamie Saft produces and records all the magnificent noise, adding his own voice on various organs, guitars and basses; and, underneath it all, Previte's tough drums propel the coalition forward. INSTRUMENTAL ROCK AT IT"S FINEST.

Genre/Style: Rock / Jazz / Instrumental

Thursday
City By Light Divided

Release Date: 05/02/06
Label: Island
CD: $13.98

check this out: The original idea, a two disc concept album entitled A City By Light Divided (a poem by Octavio Paz), was scrapped after troubles within the band and a new lyrical direction. According to the last report, there are sixteen songs written, and the band is confident about twelve of them. The new album is expected to be released on May 2, 2006. Thursday will also be doing some small shows around the country at that time in an attempt to hold on to their DIY roots. They have finished a single entitled "Counting 5,4,3,2,1" available on the internet. -found on wikipedia. cool?

Tool
10,000 Days

Release Date: 05/02/06
Label: Volcano
CD: $18.98 Sale $16.98

With a majority of the songs on 10,000 Days clocking in well past the seven-minute mark, you wouldn't be entirely mistaken in thinking that the title of the album refers to how long it actually takes to make it through the whole thing. Two of the tracks--the sitar and tabla enhanced "10,000 Days (Wings Part 2)" and its suitably epic psych-rock sister "Rosetta Stoned"--even linger on for nearly a dozen leisurely minutes each. That's delightful news for the legion of Tool fans that have been waiting five years for the follow-up to 2001's Lateralus, which debuted at number one and sold 2.3 million copies in the United States. Singer Maynard James Keenan is back on mystical form after his hiatus with the politically slanted A Perfect Circle, sounding at once ethereal and eloquent as he calmly charges through the metal tempest of the opening track "Vicarious." The rest of the band, meanwhile, hits a series of high-flying moments with tracks such as "Jambi" and "The Pot." When Tool sounds as good as it does on these songs it's hard to get enough. Which makes it all the more baffling that a surprisingly large chunk of the disc is given over to mood-enhancing soundscapes like "Lost Keys" and "Vigniti Tres." Who has time for filler? --Aidin Vaziri

Up Bustle and Out
City Breakers: 18 Frames Per Second

Release Date: 05/02/06
Label: Collision
CD: $16.98

Up, Bustle & Out are one of the original Ninja Tune label acts. Over the past ten years, UBO have released five albums & countless singles through the London-based label, kindling world-wide interest in their experimental, multicultural sound. The forthcoming CD longplayer, "City Breakers.", is the magnificent 7th album! - and was previously in ltd. vinyl only version available - it's similar in spirit and attitude to the 2003 "Urban Evacuation" album (Unique Records #UNIQ069). UBO spent more smoky hours in their Bristol studio to produce this exciting fusion of Reggae, Dub & Hip Hop street grooves. The new album includes as well a number of hand-picked vocal tracks, with giants like Black Roots' Ras Jabulani, Jamaican Deejay Mexican and Roni Size vocalist MC Nicky Blaze contributing vocals. Other musical guests on the album include Nitin Sawhney & Cuffy 'El Guapo' (Flamenco Guitar). The album artwork is especially designed by American artist Blanquito - the CD has a playing time of over 71 minutes including five bonus tracks.

Surface to Air

Release Date: 05/02/06
Label: Relapse

CD:$14.98
The extraordinary two-piece Zombi has reappeared with Surface to Air, the long awaited follow-up to it's acclaimed debut Cosmos. Surface to Air teems with the stirring, trance-inducing deluges of rhythm and sound the duo is renowned for. Swelling waves of melodic synth ride atop a broad bass and drum foundation. Sequences of repetition roll, build, and unfold with the measured patience of master artisans. Less an album than a moving, breathing mass of symphonic sound; Surface to Air creates boundless moving pictures that are nothing short of breathtaking.

Restocked! 2nd edition now available. A unique 'soundbox' from China, which is causing senstation worldwide. Gomez
How We Operate

Release Date: 05/02/06
Label: ATO Records
CD: $13.98

For How We Operate, their fifth studio album, Gomez didn't set out to reinvent the wheel. Oh no. The British quintet just wanted to change the blueprint for a different sort of rounded object: Their own records. This focused approach resulted in a cohesive and accessible collection of songs that feature deft musicianship, lush melodies, and the band's poetic yet narrative lyrical style.

Tom Brosseau
Empty Houses Are Lonely

Release Date: 04/04/06
Label: Fat Cat
CD: $12.98 Sale $9.98
A collection of highlights from his recorded history to date, augmented by several new recordings, mostly recorded and produced by Gregory Page in San Diego and Poway, Empty Houses Are Lonely works as an introduction to Tom Brosseau's plaintive, eloquent and timeless music. It is a representation of Brosseau's early days in San Diego, Poway and Los Angeles, where he was affected by the various apartments, houses, rooms and hotels where he lived. Brosseau's natural songwriting talent is influenced by such artists as Nick Drake, Woody Guthrie and Cole Porter -- he can be hauntingly moody and atmospheric, and manages to avoid the typical verse-chorus-bridge song structures in his writing. The most notable ingredient in Brosseau's work is his voice which sounds eerily like a high-lonesome reincarnation of Jeff Buckley. High, limber and sometimes vibrato-tinged, it seems to hover between the masculine and the feminine.

Love is All
Nine Times That Same Song

Release Date: 05/02/06
Label: What's Your Rupture
CD: $13.98

The debut CD from Swedens Love Is All. Ten songs of heart and soul punk featuring the classics that brought a John Peel Session, a single of the week in the NME, and a place between My Bloody Valentine and Josef K on Rough Trade Ships Indiepop Vol 1. A marvel of sound and volume produced like a dog (wearing shades) jumped all over the mixing desk, pissing wilddly with excitement (NME) by Woodie Taylor of Comet Gain. Described by Calvin Johnson in Rockpile as a spiraling cacophony that drives one to the dance floor to pogo like a maniac.

Lanterna
Desert Ocean

Release Date: 03/14/06
Label: Badman / Jemez Mountain
CD: $13.98

Highly Recommend! The ten songs on Desert Ocean were inspired by Henry Frayne's recent travels across the U.S. and Europe and conjure the natural beauty the guitarist soaked up while touring in support of his last album. The winding roads, mountain canyons and beautiful scenery he experienced are marvelously captured in the album's ambient guitar-scapes. Amazingly, Frayne achieves this through relatively modest means. Employing just a few classic guitars and joined only by recording mate Eric Gebow on drums, Lanterna's sound is completely enveloping, harkening back at times to the psychedelic sonic washes of early Pink Floyd.

The Green Arrows
4-Track Recording Session

Release Date: 02/14/06
Label: Alula

A milestone in Zimbabwean music history. Released originally in 1976. Recently reunited for a performance in 2005. With all the hoopla surrounding the Ethiopiques release as featured in the movie 'Broken Flowers' - this type of ultra hip, soulful-funky world music makes this reissue very relevant.

Young People
All at Once

Release Date: 03/21/06
Label: Too Pure
CD: $12.98 Sale $9.98
It’s a cold, apocalyptic landscape that these songs are carved over. I get the feeling that the three souls that make up this avant-garde noise group have never had an easy day in their lives- calloused hands, hair rough as tumbleweed- but that’s not the case, well, not by judging from the press photos. The music is subdued, but in no way spiritless- sweet, but not candy-coated. Young People are expert minimalists, but hold on to the their claim of no note wasted. For such little complexity, a miraculous amount is communicated. At their most dark, you feel like this is the last song you’ll ever hear on the last day you’ll ever live, and for some reason your sitting on the edge of a canyon. This is one of the more powerfully solitary albums i’ve heard in some time. Each vocal groan, swell of feedback, tribal rumble, and wash of cymbal is captured quite delicately. It’s music that throbs. -- Nate Hollingsworth

I am not going to say a lot about what this movie entails - you can grasp the idea from the website, especially if you watch the 7 min feature. I will say I was down with the whole Darwin aspect and man's idea of the food chain but we have done some unforgiveable things. If we are higher in order because we hold the power of thought and reason then who was thinking when these acts were done. They were not thinking how I would have thought and I think people should know. Watch this film. Change your life or don't change your life - just know why you make such choices. It will be a terrible shame if we come to know greed as the killer of this planet.

If you are in downtown Norfolk on Saturday night you might enjoy walking into Hell's Kitchen. We will be hosting a singer/songwritin' machete - Ronnie Drew. I think this guy might be a babe magnet - and it always comes from the least likely places. Take Ron Jeremy for example. Who would have thought? Really though you need to examine this guy's sound - it's a banquet brawl between Steve Earle and Pink Floyd. Who goes home with the red wine stains? Tought to say my friend.

Epic, immense, cathartic, passionate, intense. Sounds familiar? True, these clichéd adjectives sound like someone trying to promote the latest half hit-wonder. Although Wilderness fit snugly into these characteristics, they do so with such vibrant originality that they could hardly be lumped together with today’s forgettable all-hype no-substance acts. Come check them out with Parts & Labor (I couldn't pick a better supporting act!)
