Are you like me? Do you spend countless days dancing in your bedroom to No Kill No Beep Beep or Different Damage, with a single tear each half hour falling at the attrocity of Q and not U’s break up, praying for new songs as incredible as “Hooray for Humans” and “Soft Pyramids”? Well, the DC dance-punk gods aren’t re-uniting anytime soon, but their members have certainly not fallen silent. QANU drummer John Davis has teamed up with keyboardist/vocalist Laura Burhenn to form a delightful duo called Georgie James. John plays guitars, bass, and drums on the recordings and they both sing to make music less dance-punky and closer to the feel-good pop of The Zombies and other pleasant early seventies acts full of sweet harmonies and clever hooks. We recently got in their 7 song ep “Demos at Dance Place” and their EP “Need Your Needs,” and I must so both are very wonderful. Come try them out.
Also, in case you love QANU and missed this, frontman Christopher Paul Richardson has a solo album under the moniker Ris Paul Ric (get it? chRIS PAUL RIChardson?) from 2005 called Purple Blaze. And seriously, it’s amazing. Imagine if Q and not U went acoustic but decided to use classical guitar lines and Prince songwriting style. Give both records a try and put an end to those weepy alone dances.
