Vietnam

< author: The Franze >

New band signed to Kemado Records Vietnam has been flying under the radar as of late, and im tired of that shit. People need to know about this album. A four piece rock band out of Brooklyn, the members of Vietnam all live together in a communal style house with an open door policy (like a beautiful long haired neo hippie family).

Their self titled full length was recorded completely analog, giving it the vintage feel, and the music itself pays homage to the late 60’s with long hair, rustic vocals, timeless lyrics, and Dylan-esque arrangments and guitar tones. This is modern blues / soul / rock at its best, and i am tired of it being overlooked. Come to the store now and take a listen. If you feel like there are too many poppy bands these days, Vietnam is perfect for you, if you grew up listening to Dylan, the Dead, and miss Frisco in the late 60’s this is for you, if you are one of those cool kids who wears a Led Zeppelin 1979 Tour t-shirt that you bought overpriced at hot topic… this might add to your coolness, and hopefully open your eyes a bit.

Weren’t these guys on VICE for a split second? Wonder what happened there.

  2. braided Says:

you have to read the FADER issue with them on the cover to find out what happened with the VICE thing. Anyhow Vietnam isn’t doing anything new and even more so I dont know if the public is looking for a Dylan influenced psych soul band. These guys will need to get on a soundtrack if they want any major notoriety. Nonetheless I fucking love this record and I have been playing constantly for about 2 months. Along with the new Jarvis Cocker, !!!, Peter Bjorn & John, The Shins, Tom Brosseau, Deerhunter, etc

you know, all the popular under the radar shit.

  3. The Franze Says:

I agree that they arent doing anything new, but they are making good solid throwback tunes and bringing it (hopefully) to an age group that will appreciate it and then go back to study the influences. As a result appreciating more good music. I had no idea about the FADER thing, i dont read FADER, but good for them. The under the radar reerence was due to the fact that no one shopping at the store takes a listen to them.

i saw these guys live like 3 years ago and they were all WASTED and wearing ponchos

“they were all WASTED and wearing ponchos”

they party the way a VICE band should, and VICE didn’t like it.

  6. Fuck Beards Says:

I know VICE is sort of new to VB/Norfolk, but in NY it’s tired. Let me guess, coke’s big down there?

  7. david Says:

yes coke is big down here, coke II however, not so big.

and VICE is not tired in NYC unless you have read VICE in NYC for multiple issues. NYC has 1000s of newbies a day. there are probably a million people in NYC who dont even know what the fuck VICE is. if you do anything for a while it gets tired.

Let me guess, Sublime’s big up there?
