Melted Mailbox
< author: hsd >
Sometimes the fun in shopping of records is the mystery. Buying things you’ve only heard good things about, or just picking up a record based on a description, suggestion. Even just because you like the cover. That mystery of first putting it on, and finding out whether it was “money well spent’ and when if its not, trying to justify the bad purchase through many “It’s not that bad”.
Well everyone is not like that. They like to know what they are buying. I am like that, a good description, of word of mouth from a solid friend, will prompt me to take out my wallet. So when I read about the Melted Mailbox at the RTR website a couple months ago I order quicker than you could say “Overdraft Fee”.
Well here I am to either convince you of your mistake, or reassure of your decision.
The first two records I got were by Dino Felipe’s “Lucky Chairs EP” and Sunroof!’s “Goldfoxradianthow”. I had not heard of either, but was familiar with Matthew Bower’s old bands Total and Skull Flower. The Dino Felipe is Glitchy Experimental that is a lot more interesting than similar artists. He uses interesting textures and rhythms and doesn’t fall into the category of random = good. The Sunroof! Is a lot more minimal. Long Noisy Soundscapes, that wallow in their own fuzziness. A bit less interesting, but still a cool listen I look forward to diving into more later.
The packaging is what really ties this together. Both records are one-sided as promised with similar etched patterns of 8 or 9 even lines repeated on the back, with each respective band etched along side. The covers are amazing; particularly Dino Felipe depicting a skull made out of everything a skull is not made out of. The record box also came along with many sheets of paper with various pieces of art on them.
